Connecticut picks Hernandez

STORRS, Conn.  Sophomore D.J. Hernandez has won the three-way battle for the starting quarterback spot at the University of Connecticut.

Hernandez beat senior Matt Bonislawaski, last year's first-string quarterback, and sophomore Dennis Brown, coach Randy Edsall announced Thursday.

Another quarterback, red-shirt freshman Billy Cundiff, announced last week that he was transferring to Division II Ashland University in Ohio.

"After yesterday's scrimmage and also the chance that we have had to evaluate the play of our quarterbacks last season and in the spring, it is clearly my opinion, and also that of our coaching staff, that D.J. should be our number one quarterback," Edsall said Thursday. "He is the best choice to lead our team right now and I have the utmost of confidence in him and his abilities."

Hernandez, who starred at Bristol Central High School, started two games last year while Bonislawaski was injured, and played in seven.

He completed 46 of 90 passes for 515 yards with six touchdowns and one interception. He also rushed for 286 rushing yards on 64 carries.

Edsall did not say which quarterback would be his backup. The team said it would release a complete depth chart on Aug. 22.

Connecticut, which finished last season 5-6, will host its opening game on Aug. 31 against Rhode Island
