How both Fredrick Modin and Marty St. Louis are not finalists for the Selke award is way beyond me...They were like 1 and 2 in plus/minus among forwards and are without a doubt the best two-way players in the game today....I guess they have to give awards to someone else on other teams even though both Freddie and Marty deserve it.

You think Modin and St Louis are two of the top three defensive forwards in all of NHL? I don't think either are and plus/minus does not mean a whole lot as most of the best defensive forwards in the game are on the ice against the other teams best player every shift and are more concerned about shutting them down then scoring points.  I think St louis and Modin are fine two way players but I dont think either s are shut down defensive forwards. i think of Kris Draper on Detroit and Jere Lehtinen of dallas.

You also have to look at Penalty Killing to as a defensive forward and for Marty to have 8 shorthanded goals means he was doing something right on defense first and Modin started the season playing against the other teams top scoring lines

That is a good point. I agree that both players are excellent two way players but I just dont think they are Selke finalists.

Who are the finalists for the award?

I dont think u could knock off 2 of the finalists for Modin and Marty. 1 of them, maybe, but not 2. Let's be realistic here.

That being said, Marty should be on the list. You cant be MVP, lead the league in plus/minus and SHG and NOT be on the list.

1)He is not MVP yet. 2)Wayne Gretzky in 83-84 had 205 points, +76, 12 SHG was league MVP, won stanley cup and mvp, Doug Jarvis(WAS) won Selke.  84-85 Gretzky had 208 pts, +98, 11SHG, won mvp, stanley cup and mvp, Craig Ramsey(TB asst coach) won Selke.  Having a great +/-, lots of SHG, and being league MVP does not equate to being the BEST defensive forward in hockey.  There are many players that all they do is concentrate on Defense and St Louis is not one of them. He is one of the best two way players in the league but in my opinion is not one of the top defensive forwards.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
