Brazil 3, Ghana 0

By TALES AZZONI, Associated Press Writer

June 27, 2006

DORTMUND, Germany (AP) -- Brazil advanced past newcomer Ghana with three streaking goals Tuesday, the first an early flash by Ronaldo that made him the most prolific scorer in World Cup history.

Ronaldo netted his 15th World Cup goal in the fifth minute -- passing German Gerd Mueller to become the tournament's all-time leading scorer -- and Adriano and Ze Roberto added one each to give Brazil the 3-0 win.

Ghana made Brazil work for its 11th straight World Cup win, challenging the five-time champions and outplaying them at times, but their shots were either right at goalkeeper Dida or off the mark.

The result secured Brazil in the quarterfinals for the fourth straight time. The last time it was eliminated in the second round was in 1990 in Italy, when it lost to archrival Argentina.

Brazil will face either France or Spain, which play later Tuesday in Hanover.

Each of Brazil's goals was built upon long, penetrating passes.

The first, by Ronaldo, put Brazil ahead in the fifth minute with a brilliant stepover move before beating Ghana goalkeeper Richard Kingson. The striker broke the offside trap near midfield after a perfectly timed pass from midfielder Kaka.

Adriano added to Brazil's lead in a breakaway one minute into first-half injury time, using his left thigh to complete a right-flank cross from captain Cafu. Defender Lucio started the play at midfield, giving the ball to Kaka, who then found Cafu on the right side.

Replays showed Adriano appeared to be offside when he touched the ball into the net. Fans heavily booed when the big screen at the stadium showed the replay.

Ze Roberto closed the scoring in the 84th, getting past Kingson and finding the open net.

I am now loving this game ... it is so F'n exciting here and the place erupts with celebration after each goal - and especially after a win.
