U of L senior running back Michael Bush and junior quarterback Brian Brohm were among 60 candidates named to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, given annually to college football's top player as chosen by the Maxwell Football Club in Philadelphia.

Among the Player of the Year awards handed out nationally, the Maxwell is notable because it is presented during ESPN's Home Depot Awards Show in December.

Defensive end Elvis Dumervil was the first U of L player ever to pick up a major national award last season when he won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy.

How about Stephen Nicholas being named as a candidate for the Nagurski award?

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
