Two charged in fatal USF shooting

TAMPA - Campus police Wednesday announced arrests of two teenagers in the Feb. 9 shooting death of Ronald Stem at the University of South Florida and said two other teens would also face charges.

Morgan Tyler Nelson, 16, and Najee D. Hunter, 17, were arrested in early March, USF police said, but the arrests were not made public because the agency was pursuing additional leads.

A grand jury indicted Nelson and Hunter on charges of first-degree murder Wednesday; additionally, Nelson was charged with attempted robbery.

Neither teen was believed to have fired that shot that killed Stem. A third teenager, believed to have been the gunman, was in custody on unrelated charges and police were still seeking a fourth suspect, USF Police Capt. Bob Staehle said.

Hunter, who was driving his mother's car that night, admitted to the crime and gave police information about the other suspects, Staehle said.

Staehle said that while Hunter waited in the car, the three teens attempted to rob Stem and then shot him when he didn't produce money.

Stem was leaving the Magnolia Apartments near midnight after visiting his fiance.
