Angelberger Leads USF To A 4-3 Win Over Western Carolina

DeLAND, Fla. (Friday, Feb. 24) – Joey Angelberger drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning as the University of South Florida baseball team (3-5) downed the Western Carolina Catamounts (1-2), 4-3, during the first game of the Stetson Invitational on Friday, Feb. 24. The win snapped USF’s four-game losing skid, drawing the Bulls within two games of .500.

Angelberger, who went 2-for-6, registered the game-winning RBI, notched his second-straight multiple-hit contest of the 2006 season. The Dunedin, Fla., native struggled early in the contest, striking out four times, however came up big when it counted, driving the ball to center field with the winning run on third in the bottom of the 13th. Senior Kris Howell extended his career-best hitting streak to seven games, going 2-for-5 with a triple and a run scored. Catcher Brian Baisley hit 2-for-6 with a run scored while recording his fifth double of the season. Sophomore Dexter Butler went 2-for-6, including the game-winning run versus Western Carolina. In all, the Bulls rattled off 10 hits in the game.

Junior Casey Hudpseth struck out eight Catamount batters in seven innings, allowing no runs on three hits to earn a “no decision”. The Sarasota, Fla., native faced 29 batters on the afternoon. Sophomore Jim Cassidy was credited with the victory, allowing no runs on three hits in three innings versus Western Carolina. The victory was the first of Cassidy’s career.

USF took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Mike Consolmagno scored on a double steal by the center fielder and Baisley. On a 1-1 count, Baisley made a break for second base. As the Catamount catcher made the throw to second, Consolmagno stole home. The stolen base was the second of the season by the red-shirt freshman. The score gave USF its first lead since defeating Northwestern on Feb. 12.

The Bulls extended their lead with an RBI-single by Ty Taborelli in the bottom of the third. With Addison Maruszak on second, Taborelli hit a single to left field, scoring the first-year shortstop, making the score 2-0.

An RBI-double by Baisley down the left-field line scored Howell from third to give USF a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Howell reached third with a lead-off triple to start the inning.

The Catamounts scored a run in the top of the eighth on an RBI-single by Blake Murphy to cut USF’s lead to 3-1. Western Carolina tied the game in the top of the ninth, scoring two runs on three hits.

USF had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. With runners on second and third and two outs, Yuri Higgins struck out swinging to end the inning and send the contest to extra innings.

Angelberger registered the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 13th, scoring Butler on a single to center field.

The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Bulls, and improved USF’s record to 4-4 all-time versus the Catamounts. The game tied the longest game played at Melching Field (13 innings) and was the second extra-inning game of the 2006 season for the Bulls.

USF will face the Illinois Fighting Illini in its second game of the Stetson Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 25. On the mound for the Bulls will be sophomore Daniel Thomas. Slated to start for the Illini will be junior Jake Toohey. Game time is 1 p.m.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

    Terry Lucas, 09/26/22
