Bulls' upset draws plenty of attention

By GREG AUMAN, Times Staff Writer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TAMPA - USF's stunning upset of then-No.9 Louisville drew praise from across the country and even from Bucs coach Jon Gruden, who watched the game from a hotel in Wisconsin.

"I would like to congratulate the USF Bulls on a rousing victory," Gruden said Monday. "It fired us up, really, while we were in our hotel. (They) handed it to Louisville. That was a great win for our local fans and USF football."

The buzz was enough that Gruden's 3-0 Bucs weren't the opening topic on Steve Duemig's afternoon radio show on WDAE 620-AM. The Bulls had rarely drawn enough headlines or callers to merit lengthy discussion.

"How can you not give top billing to USF?" Duemig said in opening his show. "Congratulations to Jim Leavitt and the rest of the Bulls football team for a stunning, eye-opening victory."

He wasn't the only one handing kudos the Bulls' way. USF was named the team of the week by the Football Writers Association of America.

Receiver Amarri Jackson, who ran for two touchdowns, passed for another and caught a 57-yard pass, was named the Big East offensive player of the week and linebacker Ben Moffitt, who had a game-high 14 tackles and forced and recovered a fumble, the defensive player of the week.

The excitement should carry over to Saturday against Miami.

Vicki Mitchell, the assistant athletic director for development, said the Bulls expect to use about 2,000 tickets allotted from Miami not counting those who bought tickets on their own. The high was about 1,000 for the trip to Alabama in 2003 with Army that same year close behind.

"It's so exciting, and this has happened at a wonderful time," said Mitchell, who said the Bulls' contingent to Miami will include three buses of fans.

The only downside is the Bulls don't play again at home until Oct.22, against West Virginia.

"We've been getting a ton of calls about Miami, but people are asking about season tickets, too," account executive Mike Stuben said.

"Once they find out there are only two home games left this year, I've had a lot of people leaving their name and number, wanting us to call them as soon as season tickets go on sale for next season. The phones have been busy."

Thats great news!  We need a full house for every game, just look at the impact the crowd had on Louisville game.  We need that every Home game to get a REAL home field advantage.

There isn't anything in sports like a sold out college football game.

Well, there's also the trip to Pittsburgh on the 15th. That is officially a must-win for the Bulls, for conference and credibility reasons, regardless of how the UM games goes.

We'd be 2-0 in conference play, and if West Virginia is 3-0 going in (they'd have to beat Louisville), that game at RJS could ultimately decide the the conference title.
