USF sorts out roles today

By Times Staff Writers Times Wires

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TAMPA - USF will hold its only full scrimmage of the preseason today, with a few key starting positions on the line.

"We're feeling pretty good about our first team," coach Jim Leavitt said . "That's about it. ... I know our quarterback situation. It's a two-man deal, with (freshman) Carlton ( Hill) getting a number of reps also."

Junior Pat Julmiste and sophomore Courtney Denson will split reps today in what is now a close two-man race for the opening starting nod at quarterback. Leavitt said Hill will play at quarterback and/or receiver in the Sept. 3 opener at Penn State.

"We're just trying to see how consistent we can be, get some first downs and move the chains," offensive coordinator Rod Smith said. With significant injuries to safety Danny Verpaele (foot) and defensive end Jarriett Buie (ankle), Leavitt said he'll hold out several starters to limit the risk of additional injuries.

ONE STEP CLOSER: USF has received releases on two potential transfers, former North Carolina running back Vince Wilson of Daytona Beach and LSU receiver Amp Hill of Jacksonville. The Bulls are waiting for another transfer, N.C. State defensive end Maurice Charles, to be accepted by the university.

THIS AND THAT: Freshman Paul Uhatafe, a Gibbs graduate, has moved to guard after one week at defensive tackle. ... Walk-on Colby Erskin of Seminole, after a week at defensive back, is back at running back, though he had a boot on his left foot Friday.

Wel, for everyone who wanted to see Hill in the mix, there you go.  Looks like he is starting to make CJL take notice.  I think with these transfers coming in, and the talent we already have, we are going to see our Bulls rise to the next level.  Everyone is being pushed by competition and I think that is what this team needs.  I mean, how great is that to have people on our team that are so talented and competitive that they are just looking for ways to get on the field.  People switching spots to take up the slack and be a team player and play wherever their talent and the needs of the team allow them to.  I am so psyched!

Agree about expecting to see Hill on the field a lot. And expect/hope he'll flourish at either position.

But expect him to get most plays at WR and he'll have success there and see that his future at the next level is here.

Hope to see one QB have a monster day.

Go BULLS !!!
