Welcome back to one of the nation's fastest growing research universities

Michael Reich, (813) 974-8988

TAMPA, Fla. (Aug. 4, 2005) - As faculty and students come back to campus for the beginning of a new academic year, they will be stepping foot onto the grounds of one of the nation's fastest growing research universities in terms of federal research and development expenditures, according to the National Science Foundation's annual Survey of Research and Development Expenditures at Universities and Colleges.

The results were reported in the July 29 Chronicle of Higher Education, which stated: "Universities within the top 100 that rose the most positions from 2002 included Vanderbilt University and the University of South Florida."

"This is a positive sign of USF's progress toward meeting its goal of becoming a top 50 public research university in five years," said USF President Judy Genshaft. "This is a result of the faculty's hard work and dedication to research excellence. This is also a tribute to the wonderful support and funding from Congressman C.W. Bill Young."

USF broke into the prestigious group at the 71st spot as the recipient of more than $106 million in federal research expenditures in 2003, an increase of more than 26 percent from the previous year and one of the most dramatic upward moves of institutions on the list.

USF's impressive research advances in fields such as biological defense, microelectromechanical systems and oceanography, have garnered the attention of several elite federal research groups, including:

* National Science Foundation (NSF)

* National Institute of Health (NIH)

* National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

* National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

* Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

USF research supported by federal research and development expenditures impacts the world we live in today and paves the way for a better tomorrow. They are committed not only to scientific advances but to practical applications of their research findings for the betterment of our communities, our economies, our environment and our world.

The latest rankings are so significant for USF because a research university is about the passion to invent, to try new approaches. USF is charged with the mission of formulating bold ideas, fearlessly assessing their validity and transporting its findings into classrooms and the larger world. USF's research findings do not stay stagnant in a lab. Findings are implemented in classrooms across campus, in communities around the Bay and around the world. What our researchers see through their microscopes today could be the foundation for a safer, cleaner, more prosperous tomorrow. It is through their commitment to never believe the problems of today cannot be solved to give us a better world tomorrow.
