I'll bet with the TO fiasco going on in Philly, they wish they had a Doug Gabriel right now........

With Porter ailing, Raiders sign ex-Cowboy

By Jerry McDonald, STAFF WRITER

NAPA  The news regarding Jerry Porter's injured right hamstring Tuesday was worse than the Raiders had hoped.

Porter will be out a minimum of one week, and Oakland's signing of free agent wide receiver Randal Williams indicates the team is prepared in case it goes on longer.

"It's going to be a little while," coach Norv Turner said. "I can't tell you right now. It could be a couple of weeks ... he was sore this morning and won't do anything until next week for sure."

Porter, who signed a multiyear contract in the off-season, didn't seem overly concerned.

"You didn't see me out there, No. 86?" Porter joked. "I think I'll be all right. We're not in any rush."

No. 86 was Williams, who played 2001-2004 with Dallas. Primarily a special teams player with the Cowboys  he played in 35 games but caught just one pass  the Raiders signed Williams as soon as they learned the severity of Porter's injury.

"He was a guy that we obviously were aware of," Turner said. "Without Jerry, we need someone to go in the rotation and get rest for (the others)."

Wide receiver Carlos Williams is also out indefinitely with a hamstring pull, and Ronald Curry practices just once every other day while rehabbing from a torn Achilles.

The beneficiary of the available practice snaps was Doug Gabriel, who enjoyed a strong practice Tuesday afternoon.

"I'm just out there to fill in until he gets back," Gabriel said of Porter. "J.P.'s the starter, and I back him up."

A lot of teams would like to have Gabriel.

Hopefully he will have a better NFL career than Charles Lee. Talk about a waste of talent.

Lee drops way too many passes.  Gabriel has been solid when he played and teams have talked about acquiring him.  Not many teams are as deep at WR as Oakland is.  He's just in a bad situation.

“In my mind, I’m kind of like, ‘OK, excuses over'. We know what we need to do. We’ve got the right team together, and now we move forward, and we’ll evaluate and be accountable to each other, including myself, from this point forward.”
