USF lists lofty goals

ROBERTA C. NELSON

Herald Staff Writer

SARASOTA - Go for it.

That was the message Thursday to community leaders at University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee from Judy Genshaft, president of the university for the past five years.

Head of the state's second largest university, Genshaft barely paused for breath between summarizing the accomplishments of her administration and her goals for the next five years.

Now that USF was accepted into the Big East Conference and last week accepted the largest single gift in its history, Genshaft has her sights on the future.

"We will be in the top 50 research universities in the country," she said. "We are now ranked 60."

She outlined four areas - students, faculty, research, fundraising - and the goals for each.

"We need to raise the SAT scores of incoming freshmen," she said.

Within the Big East, which includes Rutgers University, University of Notre Dame, and Georgetown University, USF ranks second from the bottom in SAT scores. USF's national standing for SAT scores is 657th, while Georgetown is 29th, and University of Notre Dame is 35th.

"These students often are more likely to finish," she said. "We also need to nominate more Merit Scholars, Truman Scholars. You can't win anything if you are not nominated."

The same is true for faculty, she said.

"We need to start nominating faculty for Woodrow Wilson scholarships, Fulbright scholarships," she said. "Eventually, there will be Pulitzer Prize-winners, Nobel Peace Prize-winners. Those are the kind of awards you see at the top research universities. We are already in the top 40 public research universities."

Genshaft thanked the campus leadership council and alumni association, which have raised more than $2 million in capital funds for the Crosley Campus Center and nearly $1 million in scholarship endowment. She encouraged them to continue.

"Remember, the top 50 are moving up, too," she said.

Stronger regional campuses will help USF reach those goals, she said. In March, the board of governors designated USF a "university system" with four locations in the Tampa Bay region. Each campus - Tampa, St. Petersburg, Lakeland and Sarasota-Manatee - has fiscal autonomy, she said. Money flows directly to each campus from Tallahassee where regional boards of trustees determine expenditures.

"At some point, I'll give you academic autonomy," Genshaft said. "It gives you more flexibility, but you still need more faculty and more students."

Genshaft termed the recent $18.5 million gift from Drs. Kiran C. and Pallavi Patel "phenomenal." When matched by state funds and a $14 million capital campaign, the amount will reach $62.5 million to fund the Patel Center for Global Solutions on the Tampa campus. The center will focus on economics, trade and development, health, safety and human security, sustainable environments, and culture and the arts.

Dr. Mona Jain, a USF graduate and member of the leadership council, was in Tampa at the celebration dinner May 21 when the gift was announced. She and her husband Kailash Jain have known the Patels for 15 years, she said.

"The global center will include not just talk, but will find solutions," Jain said. "He has been very generous. My brother in Montreal called. He read about it in the papers there."

I've been thoroughly impressed with Dr. Genshaft's vision for the university and that she seems to have gained the support of both the faculty and community to help make it a reality.

Way to go, Judy!
