Ex-Vols QB Puts USF On List To Consider

A Tribune staff, wire report

Published: May 13, 2005

TAMPA - Former Tennessee quarterback Brent Schaeffer sent his release to South Florida along with several other schools where Schaeffer is considering to transfer.

A Tennessee official said Thursday that Schaeffer's release was sent ``to about 10 schools.'' His mother, Chandra Schaeffer, confirmed USF, Pittsburgh, Maryland, Texas A&M, Clemson and Miami (Ohio) had been sent a release.

She also said UCF received a release even though her son and UT coach Phil Fulmer agreed Schaeffer may not transfer to another Southeastern Conference school or a school the Vols play during his remaining eligibility. UCF visits UT in 2007, which would be his junior season.

Last fall, Schaeffer became the first true freshman to start at quarterback in an SEC opener since 1945. He must sit out the 2005 season and would have three years of eligibility remaining.

``It's still early in the process,'' Chandra Schaeffer said. ``I want him to take his time so he doesn't make the same mistake. I think we have a better insight of how this all works.''

Chandra Schaeffer said her son will visit some - but not all - of the schools he is considering. He visited USF as a senior at Deerfield Beach, and she said he will not visit again.

You might be right. After all, he must be very bright to be the first freshmen QB in the SEC to start a game since 1945.

Can he send a release to any school HE is interested in, or does that school have to show interest as well?  There are a lot of schools on that list, if they are all showing serious interest we could be in trouble of losing him again.

He can request to send it to any school, however the sender can set guidelines as to who he's allowed to send it to as UT has stated they will not grant a release to an SEC school or anyone on their future schedule.

Schools are not allowed to recruit or speak with Schaeffer directly until they receive his release so Brent must dictate who's to receive those releases.  The guidelines state that only those schools are actually allowed to contact him, however that's really not the case, and once Brent's enrollment concludes chances are he will have contact with more schools then who has received his release.  However, UT still must grant his release so once he decides he must contact UT and they must approve.  If they do not then by NCAA law Brent would be forced to sit for 2 years before playing a down at the schools which UT does not approve if Brent felt compelled to still go SEC, or to a team on UT schedule.
