USF Close To 3-Game Deal With Florida International

BRETT MCMURPHY

Published: Mar 31, 2005

TAMPA - South Florida and Florida International are close to finalizing a deal for a three- game football series, starting next season in Tampa.

The Bulls would host FIU in 2006 and 2008 and visit the Golden Panthers in 2010.

``We've had several positive conversations,'' FIU athletic director Rick Mello said. ``It's a series that would be very attractive for us. Playing South Florida makes a lot of sense for us.''

FIU begins its first full Division I-A season this fall as Sun Belt members.

Besides FIU, USF has had discussions with Indiana, Tulane and Eastern Michigan about playing future nonconference games.

USF and Eastern Michigan, of the Mid-American Conference, originally were supposed to play in 2003 at EMU. However, the game was canceled.

Eastern Michgian AD Dave Dials said there are ongoing conversations about a home- and-home series with USF, but nothing has been finalized.

Indiana and USF are considering a home-and-home series in 2008 and 2009, while Tulane is considering a two-game series, IU and TU officials said. The USF-Tulane series likely wouldn't start for at least five years.

With the NCAA expected to approve 12-game schedules starting in 2006, USF still has several openings to fill in future years.

Couldn't CJL pull some strings with Kansas State??

KSU was willing to give us a pay game but we wanted a series. I'm not really sure if they offered to play us on a 2-1 basis. Eventually they made a 2-1 with Marshall instead.

Since we are now in the BE, CJL might want to approach them again for a series.

Considering we are doing a 1-1 with Miami, NC and are talking to other BCS schools on an EQUAL basis, I don't know if it makes sense to go after 2-1 games. Perhaps, we might try 3-2 with some of the more elite schools.

So this is what our future schedule looks like (??):

2006 - 10 games scheduled (maybe 11 if Miami opts to play at RayJay)

(NOTE: NO I-AA games on the schedule!!!)

Home - Florida International, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Connecticut, Rutgers

Away - Central Florida, North Carolina, West Virginia, Louisville, Cincinnati

2 OOC games needed - 1 H, 1 A

If Miami opts to play @ USF in 2006, then we have a slot for 1 away game. Also we could exchange the 1 away slot for a 7th home game against a I-AA team.

2007 - 10 games scheduled (9 if Miami opts to play @ USF in 2006)

Home - Miami, North Carolina, West Virginia, Louisville, Cincinnati

Away - Auburn, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Connecticut, Rutgers

2 OOC games needed - 1 H, 1 A

If Miami opts to play @ USF in 2006, then we need 2 home and 1 away opponent.

2008 - 9 games scheduled

Home - Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Connecticut, Rutgers, Florida International

Away - Florida, West Virginia, Louisville, Cincinnati,  (Indiana?)

3 OOC games needed - 1 H, 2 A

2009 - 8 games scheduled

Home - West Virginia, Louisville, Cincinnati, (Indiana?)

Away - Florida, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Connecticut, Rutgers

4 OOC games needed - 3 H, 1 A

2010 - 8 games scheduled

Home - Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Connecticut, Rutgers

Away - Florida International, West Virginia, Louisville, Cincinnati

4 OOC games needed - 2 H, 2 A

We have 16 OOC slots to fill (9 Home, 7 Away based on having an even 6 home, 6 away games every year).

- Indiana = 2

- EMU = 2 (?)

- Tulane = 1

That still leaves 11 left to fill.

Also, I don't think UCF could extend their series with us... at least not without a brief hiatus - they already have 6 road games in 2007 (@ Pitt, @ Tennessee) & all 4 OOC slots filled for 2008 (per nationalchamps.net: @ Penn State, vs Pitt, @ Clemson, & @ Miami-FL).

Thanks, Howie!

Jim...You left out NC at RayJay in 2007:

USF and North Carolina Agree to Home-and-Home Football Series

(January 6, 2004) Tampa, Fla. – For the second time in as many weeks, the University of South Florida has agreed to a home-and-home football series with an ACC member program. USF and North Carolina will meet September 23, 2006 in Chapel Hill and September 22, 2007 in Raymond James Stadium.

Just two weeks ago, USF and Miami agreed to a home-and-home series set to begin October 1, 2005 in the Orange Bowl. The Hurricanes will then play in Raymond James Stadium on a date to be settled after an NCAA vote on 12-game seasons.

“The fact that schools like North Carolina and Miami are now agreeing to play USF on a home-and-home basis is testimony to how far Coach Leavitt and his staff have brought the program,†says Doug Woolard, USF Director of Athletics. “Our fans can look forward to seeing the best programs in the nation playing our Bulls right here in Tampa on a regular basis.â€Â

North Carolina completed a 6-6 season after a loss to Boston College in the Continental Tire Bowl in 2004, but three of the Tar Heel wins came against Miami, Georgia Tech and North Carolina State.

USF joins the Big East Conference in 2005, allowing the Bulls rotating home games with Cincinnati, Connecticut, Louisville, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse and West Virginia.

Look for us to try and snag a 1AA home game in 2006.  The coaching staff knows we will be real good that year and will want to capitalize on that season.  Think of all the young guys that we have playing.  Guess what, they will all still be here in 06.
