Diaz to replace Hobbie on USF coaching staff

AMPA -- When Mike Hobbie resigned this week as South Florida's tight ends/special-teams coach, coach Jim Leavitt didn't have to look far for his replacement.

Leavitt on Thursday named Bulls administrative assistant Renato Diaz. Diaz never has been a full-time football coach, but has spent the past two years learning the system while helping make USF's first season run smoothly.

Diaz, 38 and a native of Cuba, earned a degree in geology from USF in 1983. Even while using his degree, first with the U.S. Geological Survey in Miami and later with Texaco, Diaz has wanted to coach. He spent his free time coaching youth football before joining the Bulls in 1996.

"We're excited about Renato," Leavitt said. "He knows our offense inside and out, he knows our system.

"Renato's always dreamed of coaching. He's sure paid his dues. I'm very loyal to people that have done that. He'll do a real good job, there's no doubt about it."

Hobbie, a former head coach at Bradenton Bayshore High, resigned to take a job in the private sector as a full-time broker, Leavitt said. It is possible Hobbie may return to the staff.
