O’Neal enters with best triple jump distance in the field

TAMPA, MAY 19, 2016 – Eight men and one woman from USF have qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary Round held May 26-28 in Jacksonville, Fla.

The nine Bulls are among the top 48 declared athletes in their event. After next week’s competition, the top 16 in each event advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.

Six of the nine Bulls are peaking at the right time, recording season-bests at last week’s American Athletic Conference Championships. Returning to the NCAA Preliminary for the fourth time is senior Matthew O’Neal. He recorded his top triple jump this season of 54 feet, 11.50 inches (16.75m) at the conference championships, was the top jump in the East and the second-best in the NCAA this season. The Jackson, Miss. native is coming off his sixth conference title and will be a heavy favorite to advance to Eugene to with a chance to earn All-America honors for a sixth time. Also participating in Saturday’s 3 p.m. triple jump is freshman Errol Ennis. The Jamaican made the most of his lone appearance this spring with a distance of 50-7.5 (15.43m) at the conference championships which ranks 36th in the East.

Senior Paul Barrett (Tampa) qualified for the second consecutive season in the 400m hurdles. His season and personal-best time of 50.81 at the conference championships ranks 11th in the East. The quarterfinals of the 400m hurdles are Friday at 7:45 p.m.

Senior Devin Screen qualified in the discus for the second time in his career. The Tallahassee native is making a return trip for the first time since 2014 after redshirting the 2015 season. His career-best throw of 187-0 (57.01m) won the conference title and ranks 15th in the East. The discus begins at 4 p.m. on Friday.

Also making a return trip to Jacksonville is senior Winston Perry in the Pole Vault. The Fort Lauderdale native snuck into the field of 48 at No. 47 with a season-best height of 16-6.75 (5.05m). Perry will be joined by teammate David Akins who qualified in his first season with USF. The sophomore from Orlando and third-team all-conference member ranks 34th in the East with a jump of 16-8.75 (5.10m). The pole vault is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Along with Akins and Ennis, first time qualifiers include Bruce Barclay, Dwight Davis and Bernicia Holifield. We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
