Bulls Begin Conference Tourney Run Thursday

No. 9 USF plays No. 8 East Carolina at 3:30 p.m.

TAMPA, MARCH 9, 2016 – Head coach Orlando Antigua’s Bulls are optimistic and excited about the “new season” that begins this week.

Ninth-seeded USF begins its American Athletic Conference Championship run with a first-round test against eighth-seeded East Carolina 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Amway Center in Orlando.

“If we play to our strengths, take care of the ball and we rebound, we can give ourselves opportunities to win games against quality opponents,” Antigua said. “We’ve already proven it against the opponent we’re getting ready to play on Thursday.”

USF is 1-1 against East Carolina this season and started the series with a 69-52 road victory on Feb. 16. Freshman Jahmal McMurray scored a game-high 21 points and senior Jaleel Cousins grabbed 11 rebounds to help USF dominate on the boards by a 44-30 margin.

“We know that we can get it done,” McMurray said.

Thursday’s winner will advance to the quarterfinals and face top-seeded Temple on Friday at noon (TV: ESPN2). Seven of 11 teams in the league posted at least eight conference wins this season and Antigua knows anything can happen come tournament time.

“It’s a very competitive league, on any given night anybody can win,” Antigua said. “I think it’s going to be exciting for fans. It’s going to be dreadful for coaches. For the kids, I think the tournament should be a lot of fun.”

Purchase tickets for the tournament through the USF Ticket Office online at USFBullsTix.com.

“I love the game of basketball and I would love to keep this season alive, to just keep competing and showing people what we can really do when we put our minds to it,” McMurray said.
