  1. The thing is, Rick’s been around a long time and does a good job. I’ve listened to his podcast and he does a decent job including USF in the conversation. Instead of sticking up blindly for his younger colleagues, he should be mentoring them and demanding that they do better.
  2. I guess what he’s saying is - USF is horrible, so we (the Times) can be horrible with our coverage, too. When they’re good, we’ll be good, too - maybe. That’s a solid business philosophy.
  3. Exactly! They should “own” USF sports news. They should have such deep sources at this point that they never get scooped on a USF sports story by any national source or guys like Russ Wood.
  4. More proof about the Times’ position on USF football: One of the first - if not the first - opinion pieces on USF football published by the Times way back in 1995-96 was by their primary sports columnist at the time, Hubert Mizell, writing about what a horrible idea it was for USF to launch a football program. I should know. I was the copy editor on the sports desk that night assigned to give it the first read. I guess some naysayers might argue today that he was right, but he certainly wasn’t for the better part of the first two decades of the program. Could you see Bianchi doing that to UCF, or Pat Dooley doing that to UF, or Steve Ellis doing that to FSU? UF honored Dooley and Robby Andreu when they retired. Bobby Bowden said Ellis was “like a son to me” and that’s not because they were shills, they were legit journalists.
  5. I’ll also add that there is zero justification in the internet age for the Times to prioritize coverage of any other college athletic program besides USF. Pre-internet, they could argue that, but if I live in Tampa or St. Pete and I follow UF or FSU, my first stop online is the Gainesville Sun or the Tallahassee Democrat. They have much more extensive coverage of those schools than the Times. The Times should, likewise, focus on its hometown school. But this goes back to my previous post - the Times (selectively) doesn’t see itself as “Tampa Bay’s” newspaper.
  6. Looks like there’s a little Twitter battle going on between Bulls fans and the Times again, with Rick Stroud jumping in to defend the Times. The reality is - in many ways - the Times doesn’t view itself as “Tampa Bay’s” newspaper. It sees itself as a statewide Florida paper. That dates back to my days working there in the mid-1990s. That gives it justification for shoddy coverage of USF - especially when we’re losing. The same justification does not apply to the pro franchises, but, oh well. If we get things turned around, they’ll bandwagon. Odd approach, but it’s been a consistent one. I think those of us who have been around awhile and paid attention will agree that the only period where USF got quality coverage of its athletics programs was when Greg Auman held the beat. Otherwise, the Times’ efforts have been either forgettable or downright hostile.
  7. So when does the Florida legislature hold its formal secession vote?
  8. No idea if Rivals.com archives that far back or not. You’d have to be a current subscriber. I’m guessing it’s lost to time. I actually did a season with Ryan Hearn, also.
  9. Those of you who might remember the years when I ran the USF site at Rivals.com might recall that I did a weekly player diary annually. One year it was Andre Hall, a second season was Nick Capogna, and a third was Will Bleakley - who died in this accident. Such a great guy. Don’t think I could bring myself to watch this film, even now . . .
  10. Villar speaks on Giants' resilience, belief after comeback win over Padres David Villar speaks on his own perspective and Giants’ resilience after San Francisco comes back from 4-0 deficit to defeat the San Diego Padres.
  11. Looks like the Bulls picked up a decent softball transfer today - 5th year senior Sam Mallinder from Northern Illinois. Three-year starter mostly at second base. The past two seasons she started 89 games, hit around .310, 8 HR, 58 RBI. Put the ball in play with just 7 strikeouts in 151 ABs last season. Pretty good glove, too . . .
  12. Alarm bells ringing in Tally . . . AAU selects USF in stunning rebuke of FSU: Where is the accountability? Everyone who loves our great university has a role to play – this column isn’t about blame; it is about accountability. And we must all be accountable.
  13. Addarin Scott chose Auburn over us, but here’s another name for that final scholarship . . . Mohamed Keita NCAA Basketball: Analyzing 3 contenders for St. John’s transfer Mohamed Keita Mohamed Keita is one of the remaining centers in the NCAA Basketball transfer portal. Which teams are after the former St. John's big man? When head c...

  15. Right. We’re not turning down or “too good” for anything. It’s just about preference.
  16. The world would be right if FSU and Clemson left the ACC and were replaced by USF and WVU.
  17. I’m with Triple B. This is definitely my take. The Big XII does nothing for me as a fan and the PAC 12 makes zero sense. I’ve always felt the ACC is where we eventually belong. Playing schools - and aligning with them academically - in Carolina and Virginia seems much more compelling to me than schools in Kansas, Iowa and Texas.
  18. Amen, Bull Brother, it is a big deal! Go Bulls!
