Okay, how about a senior about to begin his senior year.... Top 9 in the country baby, no. 2 in the state.. USF Adds Another QB Recruit By BRETT McMURPHY bmcmurphy@tampatrib.com Published: Aug 24, 2004 TAMPA - Monticello Jefferson County High's Carlton Hill, rated the nation's No. 9 senior quarterback, verbally committed to the University of South Florida on Monday, continuing the Bulls' run on commitments from high- profile quarterbacks. Hill, the Bulls' No. 1 2005 recruiting target at quarterback, said he chose USF over Miami, LSU, Maryland and Purdue. The 6-foot-3, 212-pounder also had scholarship offers from Florida State, Florida, Auburn, Michigan State and North Carolina State. ``I admire USF's program, it's close to home and I have a pretty good chance of playing soon,'' Hill said. ``I like their team and that they're moving to the Big East [in 2005]. ``I wanted to commit before the season started so I could enjoy my senior year. This takes a lot of pressure off me.'' As a junior, Hill threw for more than 1,600 yards with 21 touchdowns and only three interceptions. He rushed for 600 yards and 12 TDs. He was also the Class 1A 200-meter state champion. As a sophomore at Tallahassee Rickards, he threw for 1,500 yards and nine TDs. ``The quarterback coach at Purdue, who used to be at Marshall when Byron Leftwich was there, said [Hill] is a combination of Leftwich and [Michael] Vick,`` Jefferson County coach Jeff Schaum told Rivals.com. Hill is rated the state's second-best and nation's ninth-best QB prospect by TheInsiders.com. The Bulls are now heavy with quarterbacks. Besides sophomore starter Pat Julmiste and freshman reserve Louis Gachette, USF added Auburn transfer Courtney Denson, a SuperPrep All- American who isn't eligible until 2005, and received commitments from Lake Gibson senior Matt Grothe and Hillsborough junior Jarred Fayson in the past month. ``That [the number of quarterbacks] is not a concern,'' Hill said. ``I'm ready to compete. I don't think I'll take any visits [to other schools]. I might visit to have fun, but I'm still headed to USF.''
