Suit: Ohio State Student Beaten by Police Officers spacer.gifAn Ohio State University student has filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Columbus, Ohio and several police officers over a "brutal unjustified physical attack" he sustained in August 2012. The lawsuit, filed last week in U.S. District Court in Columbus alleges, "As a direct and proximate result of the wrongful acts and omissions of the defendant officers, [the plaintiff] sustained severe and permanent injuries." The plaintiff sustained injuries to the head, eyes, wrists and other parts of his body and permanent scarring when confronted by officers for underage drinking. The lawsuit seeks over $75,000 and punitive damages.

Macy's Also Facing Racial Discrimination Lawsuit spacer.gifMuch like fellow luxury store Barneys, Macy's is now facing a similar racial discrimination lawsuit. The lawsuit, filed by actor Robert Brown, accuses the store of racial profiling and mirrors two lawsuits filed against Barneys earlier this week. The actor, who is black, had just made a purchase at the store when he was approached by officers who accused him of possessing a fake ID. The officers arrested him and detained him for two hours before releasing him without any charges. The lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount of damages.

The lawsuit alleges that Waste Treatment Corp. has leaked gas drilling wastewater containing high levels of salts, heavy metals and radioactive compounds into the river. The river serves as a source of drinking water for many of the area's public water suppliers which serve about 400,000 residents.

The lawsuit was filed on behalf of five families after they filed complaints with the Department of Housing and Urban Development and a local non-profit which promotes fair housing.

Lawsuit Filed Over Shooting Death of Informant spacer.gifA lawsuit has been filed against three Kansas Highway Patrol troopers who were involved in the fatal shooting of a former drug task force informant. The lawsuit, filed by the man's estate earlier this month, accuses the troopers of unreasonable seizure and use of excessive force in the death of the 56-year-old informant. On Oct. 12, 2011, three troopers were responding to reports of a man lingering on the railroad track near a local co-op. The informant, who was fired a few days prior, was shot down during a confrontation in a heavily wooded area. The lawsuit seeks over $225,000 in damages.

The first is a good example of where the feds have jurisdiction. The Allegheny dumps into the Ohio, which dumps into the Mississippi. Anyone polluting the Allegheny is committing a crime against all Americans.

 

The second? Hello? Unfrigginbelievable. No, Virginia, the Federal Government can't fix everything for everybody. Talk about overrreach!

Bedbug Infestations at Apartment Complex Sparks Lawsuit

21 tenants of a Concord, California apartment complex have filed a lawsuit against the apartment owners over recurring bedbug infestations. According to the lawsuit, the apartment complex is "infested with bedbugs, roaches and rodents, and that the heating system, wiring and plumbing are defective." Tenants say that the owners and the Concord code enforcement unit have turned a deaf ear to their years of complaints. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages, a remedy to the bedbug problem and repairs.

Exotic Dancers File Ljabor Lawsuit

Two Atlanta exotic dancers have filed a lawsuit against the strip club where they used to work alleging that their employer violated the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. Dancers at the club were charged "bar fees," "DJ fees," "breathalyzer test fees," "leave early fees" and even "slow day fees" and were not paid minimum wage. One of the plaintiffs says that she was fired immediately after her supervisor learned she was pregnant. The lawsuit claims that the plaintiffs were misclassified as independent contractors and were not fully compensated for their work.

A lawsuit has been filed against the Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center and Toppenish Community Hospital in Washington alleging that the medical centers neglected to offer charity care to low-income patients. According to the lawsuit, the hospitals have been deterring patients who cannot afford the cost of procedures from seeking charity care. The named plaintiff in the case is a woman who could not afford her hysterectomy, but the case is seeking class-action status. The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages for the plaintiff class.

An attorney representing the family of a boy who was mauled to death by dogs at the Pittsburgh Zoo says that officials were aware of the potential dangers of their African painted dog exhibit. In the documents filed this week, the attorney says that the exhibit's risks were brought up at least four times in meetings. The parents of the boy who fell into the dog exhibit filed a lawsuit against the zoo in May alleging wrongful death and negligence.

The zoo should counter-sue the parents for feeding contaminated meat to the zoo animals.

Hopefully we crack down on our legal system.  Unfortunately our political system is also run by PI lawyers.  I think there is relationship between the polarity in politics right now and the atmosphere that created this mess.

Police Throw Out Mother's Ashes, Son Files Suit spacer.gifA man from Muncie, Indiana has filed a lawsuit after police threw his mother's ashes in the garbage after searching his home. Detectives were conducting an investigation of a robbery in which the plaintiff was a suspect. Believing that the plaintiff had drugs crushed into a powder, they took the urn with his mother's ashes. The urn was later tossed in a trash can outside the plaintiff's house. The lawsuit seeks compensatory, punitive and exemplary damages, in addition to attorney's fees.

Suit: Couple Tossed From Cab After Same-Sex Kiss spacer.gifA gay couple from Chicago who was kicked out of a cab for kissing filed a lawsuit this week that alleges their rights were violated. According to the lawsuit, the taxi driver ordered the couple to get out of his car when they began kissing. When they refused, he "began driving recklessly" until he reached a parking lot where he stopped. The plaintiffs refused to get out of the car until police arrived. The taxi driver was fired and fined more than $1,500 by the city's cab regulator. The lawsuit seeks an unspecified amount of compensation.
