Mini-Camp kicks off in Tampa, Florida, on Monday February 21.

One Amsterdam Admiral who will feel at home during training camp is outside linebacker Maurice Jones (Washington Redskins), who played his college ball at the University of South Florida – based in Tampa. The outside linebacker has good instincts and the ability to make plays across the field against the run, but will use his time in Europe to improve his play against the pass.

If Redd has a chance to be the Berlin Thunder’s speed receiver, then Marque Davis (Seattle Seahawks) and Huey Whittaker (Jacksonville Jaguars) look to be their possession targets. Davis has good hands and runs precise routes, and is unafraid of going over the middle to make catches. At 6-foot-4, Whittaker is a massive target who uses his size to shield defensive backs and despite a lack of burning speed picks up yards after the catch. As a University of South Florida graduate, Whittaker will feel at home in Tampa Bay at training camp.

Maurice Jones was waived by the Admirals.

Admirals set roster

March 21, 2005

By Craig TerBlanche

NFL Europe

Bart Andrus made some tough decisions in reducing the Admirals roster. (waynepaulo.com)

With a task that no one envies, head coach Bart Andrus and his staff have cut the roster down to the 48 players who will make the trip overseas to play in the opening of the NFLEL’s 13th season on April 2.

“This is the hardest thing that I have to do,†coach Andrus said. “The thing is that these guys are young and they will have other opportunities. Professional sport is a harsh business. We have to go with the guys that we feel the most comfortable with, but it is never easy.â€Â

The Admirals made the roster moves following the final game condition scrimmage against the Cologne Centurions on Saturday, but the teams opening day rosters is still some way from being set.

Further transactions are still to come, including the designation of two American players per team as NFLEL Active players (ie. controlled by the league) and two NFLEL Practice Squad players per team. They will be announced at a later date, along with additional national player transactions.

Amsterdam quarterback and team leader Gibran Hamdan has a difficult time with this process, but understands that it is the nature of the business.

“I think everybody understands that is just part of the business,†Hamdan said. “You come out here and play as hard as you can, but some guys are going to have to go home. It is tough because you have developed relationships and because they are good guys. They need to know that this is not the end. Just because one team doesn’t keep you that doesn’t mean you can’t play. It is going to be hard. This is a tough part of the job.â€Â

One player making the cut was running back Jarrett Payton and he couldn’t be happier about the opportunity that lies ahead for him and his teammates.

“I am real excited to go to Amsterdam,†he said. “This is such a great opportunity and I am going to take advantage of it. I think the guys are really getting motivated and looking forward to getting over there and playing some games as we aim for the World Bowl.â€Â

The Admirals quest for the World Bowl begins April 2, when the host the Rhein Fire.

ACQUIRED: Carlos Perez, WR (reassigned from Hamburg).

WAIVED: Maurice Jones, LB.

INJURED RESERVE: Randee Drew, DB; Casey Knutson, OL; Jonathan Palafox, DB (previously listed as waived); Rikiya Ishida, LB (Nat.).

PRACTICE SQUAD ASSIGNMENTS: Casey Clausen, QB (from Cologne), Ben Johnson, OL (from Berlin), Matt Mitrione, OL (from Rhein).

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
