Be advised that you will most likely need to increase the size of the gas line to your house as they have a higher gas demand. Also, they will require a 120V electric circuit for the ignition. The downside is if your electricity goes out in a storm, you're out of hot water.

Instead of heating 50 gallons it is only heating the water running through it

Seisco is the brand I have. Great customer service from Texas.

I used these for 14 years while living in Japan, and absolutely LOVE them. My new place here in Austin has one too.

They can get very sophisticated over there, with massive electronic control panels, but the big difference I've noticed here is that the unit here is set to a single (very hot) temperature, and you still have to mix it with cold water to get the desired temperature.

In Japan, you just type in the # of degrees you want (40 to 42C for a hot shower), and that's what you get. No mixing.

The Japanese ones usually have piezoelectric ignition, so they work without an electricity source. You can hear them going "tick, tick, tick, whooosh" as they start up.

Many thumbs up!

And pretty sure if you replace your water heater with a tankless, you get a "rebate" from your electric supplier.

That's not too bad. At least you can drive to a nearby hotel and get a shower by renting a room.

When I was in Kobe during the quake, it was about 15 weeks before we got elec, gas, phone, water all back.

You still in LA or are you up in Seattle these days?
