Now that I know where the fields are on the campus . . . .Anyone going?  If you are, please let me know.

Bulls Take Two from UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. (May 7, 2004)-The University of South Florida softball team was led by seniors Holly Groves and Leigh Ann Ellis has the Bulls took both games of a doubleheader against UCF Friday afternoon, at the UCF Softball Complex. The Bulls took the first by a score of 8-1 and then used a four-run sixth to comeback and win 8-6 in the series finale.

In game one, USF (53-10) took advantage of six UCF errors to push across eight runs in the game off of nine hits. In the first inning, Kattrina Dowd led off the game with a double down the left field line and then scored off of Shelly Riker’s bunt single.

USF added another run in the second inning courtesy of UCF’s first error of the game, with two outs and two on Samantha Ray reached on an error by shortstop Stephanie Best allowing Krista Holle to score.

The Bulls blew the game wide open in the fourth scoring five runs off of four UCF errors in the inning. Tiffany Stewart started things off with a single through the ride side and then advanced to third on a throwing error by the first baseman. Stewart then scored on another Best error off a line drive by Sarah Watson. Holle scored off the third UCF error of the inning by the first baseman on a Dowd grounder. Riker then loaded the bases by reaching on a bunt single, Carmela Liwag then reached on a fielders choice. On the play Watson scored on a throwing error by the second baseman, the error allowed Dowd to score from second. Holly Groves knocked in her 77th RBI on a sac fly to centerfield that Riker scored on.

After the five run fourth, Danielle Urbanik took over for USF starter Leigh Ann Ellis, who improved her record to 36-4 on the year. Ellis pitched four shut-out innings, striking out eight and only surrendering one hit.

USF added another run in the seventh to push the lead to 8-0 with an RBI single by Holle down the left field line that scored Christie Chapman.

The Golden Knights were able to push a run across in the bottom of the seventh but Urbanik was able to close it out for the Bulls and pick up her first save of the season.

In the second game, Dowd led off the game with another extra base hit, tripling off the top of the left field wall. Riker followed with a walk and then Liwag singled to right field scoring Dowd. Chapman then laid down a sac bunt advancing Riker to third and Liwag to second. Holle then singled to center field scoring both runners, giving the Bulls an early 3-0 lead.

UCF quickly struck back tying the game at 3-3. Cici Alvarez followed with a walk and then stole second. She advanced to third on a sac bunt and then scored on a Best single through the right side. Jania Shinhoster followed with a double down the left field line that advanced Best to third. Crystle Krafft then doubled to right center scoring both runners.

The Bulls picked up another run in the second inning off of Liwag’s 18th double of the year that scored Samantha Ray to give the Bulls a 4-3 lead.

Ellis came in relief for the Bulls starter Kasey Cash in the third inning with two runners on and one out and was able to get out of the inning.

USF had the lead until the bottom of the fifth when UCF exploded for three runs with two outs. Kraft doubled to center field scoring Best from third. Shinhoster scored on a passed ball allowing Kraft to reach third, who then scored on a Rachelle Schmidt RBI single.

The Bulls responded back in the top of the sixth with four runs. Liwag singled to right field scoring Ray from third. Groves knocked in her 78,79,80th RBI with a base clearing double down the left field line, her second double of the day.

Ellis (37-4) was able to close out the game for the Bulls picking up her second win of the day.

USF returns to the USF Softball Complex on Sunday for a doubleheader against Setson starting at 1 p.m. The Bulls will say goodbye to seniors Holly Groves, Leigh Ann Ellis, Shelly Riker and Rena Rodriguez.
