Hey everyone… I’m looking forward to seeing more of Grothe this weekend.  I know that we are going to have to go through some growing pains with him, but the key term here is “growingâ€Â.  PJ unfortunately hasn’t shown much growth.  I liked the leadership that Grothe showed on the field too.

Anyway, I wanted to find out more info on Grothe.  Was he highly recruited out of high school?  What other schools were trying to get him when he signed with USF?

As to your questions, I think he committed to USF so early that no other schools put much time in recruiting him.  He was a monster in high school though, runner up Mr. Football.

I am as excited as anyone else about Grothe moving into the starting role.  I have been one of the most adamant Julmiste doubters around for a long time.

I have one suggestion for Matt at this point in time: Lose the mouthpiece with the facemask strap.  Get one of the "pop-in" variety.  It looks like a youth league QB to have one of those strapped to your mask.  Don't know why, but that was one of the first things I noticed when he came in.

Just a friendly suggestion in the area of "image."

lol.  Funny some girls I was with noticed that as well.  He also doesn't put it in until right before the play.  At times we thought he didn't even use it.  I like the 'strapless' version better as well.

Understood......just something for him to think about as he suits up.  Doesn't take much to snip that off and get your teeth impressions into a new strapless one.

Oh, absolutely.  I wondered that....if there was a reason he was more comfortable with having it dangle instead of wedging it in-between the bars.  I just remember how much I hated that stupid strap when I played.  But we would get flagged if the officials couldn't see that the mouthpiece was being used.

Tell him image does carry at least a little weight when you're going to be QB-ing in front of a national audience several times every year.  But even if he chose to wear head-to-toe "robo gear" like Dan Marino, as long as he QB's this team like I think he can and WILL, I don't care!

I like the old school look of the mouth piece strapped to the helmet. Just shows he doesn't care about looking good, he cares about playing good.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
