-- It took Matt Riley more than four years to make it back to the big leagues after his ill-fated 1999 debut, and in two weeks this season he went from knowing only adversity to knowing only success. Things were coming too easily for him. Truth be told, the Baltimore Orioles would not have minded if the rookie left-hander struggled a little bit more early on, to see whether he had the fortitude to go along with that powerful arm.

This, however, was probably not what they had in mind. Giving Riley a noticeably longer leash following a pair of exquisite starts, the Orioles left him in to absorb a seven-run pounding in a 7-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Wednesday night in front of 20,781 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards
