COLLEGE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP: The University of South Florida attended its first Women's Nationals, held last week in Charleston, S.C.

Racing was held on College of Charleston 420 sloops. The current on the Cooper River is strong, recorded at more than 2 knots at ebb. In lighter air it was difficult to judge when to go for a turning mark and at what angle to sail on reaches and runs.

One race Friday saw the USF team near the back of the 18-boat pack at the last mark with only a downwind leg to the finish to go. But the current held everyone back. The Bulls sailed off to the side of the bunched fleet and well past the finish line, gibing over to pass half the fleet.

USF finished ninth in only its eighth year as a team. The team included Kristen Herman, Jee Lee, Abby Ethington, Ashley Wierzbicki and coach Allison Jolly.

Evan Brown of Tampa sailed for Stanford, helping it to fourth. Brown was named honorable mention women's All-American after the event. Her usual skipper, Carolyn Brown of Tampa, broke her clavicle last month and could not compete. Stanford's coach is Jay Kehoe, the former sailing coach at St. Petersburg Yacht Club.

I don't know what half that means, but ninth in the nationals is good...I guess...   ???
