Robinson and Dunedin were involved in an on-field altercation while the teams were shaking hands after the Knights' 4-3 victory against the Falcons in Tuesday night's Class 5A-Region 3 quarterfinal matchup at Knology Park.

When reached by telephone after the game, Robinson coach Sal Urso described the altercation as follows:

While the teams were shaking hands, a Dunedin player hit Robinson's Alex Floyd with a forearm in the face. When Urso went to break up the altercation, one of the Dunedin coaches grabbed Floyd "up around the neck" and would not release him.

After some arguing between the two teams, "three or four" Dunedin players charged Urso, pulling his jersey over his head, and at least one Dunedin player threw a punch. The fracas then escalated more before coaches got things under control.

After everything calmed down, Urso said Dunedin players began "throwing baseballs from the dugout" at his team.

Urso said Pinellas County law enforcement officials were called to the scene, but following a brief investigation with input from Urso and Dunedin coach Tom Hilbert, no criminal charges were filed.

"It was pretty sad that sportsmanship by Dunedin was that bad," Urso said. "We didn't want anything like this to happen. We didn't do anything wrong."

Hilbert declined to comment on specifics of the incident, but did say "both sides let the emotions get the better of them, both players and coaches."

This is the second on-field altercation involving a Hillsborough County baseball team this season. Wharton and Armwood were involved in an incident March 31.

They should have never been shaking hands. Tensions were running high the whole game. The Dunedin catcher had blocked the plate earlier in the game and a Robinson player made a clean side at the plate (no spikes high or anything) and drilled the catcher. Stupid umpire throws the Robinson kid out of the game for sliding into the catcher. What is the guy supposed to do different is what I want to know? From there it was clear the two teams did not care for each other. As they went to shake hands I was thinking not a good idea. Dunedin definitely started the post game brawl. It almost turned into a riot. One of the craziest games I have seen. Well worth the $6.

It must have been in the air last night. Anaheim and Oakland went at it to.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
