FLORIDA SOUTHERN SUFFERS FIRST LOSS TO NOVA

It was a night of adversity for the Florida Southern Moccasins. The result was an 85-73 setback at the hands of Nova Southeastern on Wednesday night at Ft. Lauderdale.

First, the Moccasins lost point guard Allen Gilberry to an injury in the first five minutes of the game and he did not return. Gilberry was injured in a collision and was taken to a hospital to check for a possible concussion. Second, Blake Williams, the Mocs' leading rebounder, was plagued by foul trouble and was on the floor for just seven minutes, scoring no points and collecting just one rebound.

Despite that, the Moccasins rallied from a 15-point second half deficit and had a chance to take the lead with just over six minutes remaining. Trailing 66-64, the Mocs' turned the ball over and committed a foul. Following a Nova Southeastern missed shot, Dale Parsons was fouled and went to the line with 5:13 remaining. He made the first of two for his 20th straight free throw to cut the Nova lead to 66-65, but missed the second attempt and FSC never got any closer. The Sharks then went on a 9-0 run to boost the lead to 75-65 with 1:26 left.

The Moccasins, losing for only the second time on the road this season, fell to 14-8, 5-6 in the SSC. With its first win in 10 tries against FSC, Nova Southeastern improved to 14-7, 8-3 in the SSC. With their 85 points, the Sharks ended FSC's string of consecutive games holding SSC opponents under 80 points at 67.

Hurley Dunbar led the Moccasins' scoring with 18 points. Parsons had 14 and Dominic Girod came off the bench to score 11. Garrett Hull, who came in when Gilberry was injured, scored nine points, all in the first half.

Nova Southeastern had five players, including three off the bench, score in double figures, led by Tom Coenraad with 17.

The Moccasins play Barry at Jenkins Field House on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
