Final Score: (12) Louisville 31, Kentucky 24

Lexington, KY (Sports Network) - Michael Bush rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns to lead 12th-ranked Louisville past Kentucky, 31-24, in the battle for the Governor's Cup at Commonwealth Stadium.

Brian Brohm threw for 179 yards and also rushed for a pair of touchdowns for the Cardinals (1-0), who have won eight of 12 meetings against Kentucky since the schools resumed the rivalry in 1994.

Louisville, which went 11-1 last season, has its highest national ranking to start a season in school history. This year also marks the Cardinals' first as a member of the Big East Conference.

Andre Woodson threw for 278 yards and two touchdowns for Kentucky (0-1), but also lost three fumbles in the setback. The Wildcats dropped to 1-5 all-time when opening a season against a ranked team.

Arthur Carmody's 19-yard field goal gave Louisville a 31-17 edge early in the fourth quarter, but the Wildcats refused to go away and made it a one- touchdown game.

Woodson and Jacob Tamme connected on a 15-yard TD pass to cut the deficit to 31-24 with 11:52 left. Woodson also hit Keenan Burton for a 33-yard strike on the drive.

Kentucky nearly scored the game-tying touchdown midway through the fourth, but the Cardinals came up with a big stop. Woodson called his own number from the seven-yard line and appeared ready to plunge into the end zone. However, Brandon Johnson stood the quarterback up just before the goal line and stripped the ball loose before falling on it.

That would be the last time Kentucky would have the ball as Louisville gained a few first downs and was able to run out the remaining 6:21.

Louisville grabbed a 7-0 lead on Brohm's one-yard TD run with 8:22 left in the first. The 13-play, 68-yard drive opened the game and took 6:38 off the clock.

The Wildcats evened the game on a six-yard TD run by Arliss Beach with 4:08 left in the first. The key play of the drive was a 34-yard pass from Woodson to Burton.

Louisville took a 14-7 advantage just six seconds into the second quarter thanks to a three-yard TD scamper by Brohm.

The Cardinals turned a Kentucky turnover into more points midway through the second period. Woodson fumbled the ball deep in his own territory and Louisville would take over at the Wildcats' 17-yard line. Two plays later, Bush rumbled 12 yards into the end zone to give Louisville a 21-7 lead with 6:32 left.

Louisville extended its lead to 28-7 before the half after a one-yard TD run by Bush. That touchdown was also set up by a Woodson fumble.

The Wildcats scored 10 unanswered points in the third quarter to cut the deficit to 28-17.

Taylor Begley kicked a 37-yard field goal with 11:14 left to go in the third quarter. Woodson then connected with Scott Mitchell on 21-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-17 with 6:01 left.

Game Notes

Elvis Dumervil set a new Louisville record with six sacks in the game. The previous record of five was set by Mike Flores against Murray State in 1990...The Cardinals gained 209 yards on the ground compared to just 47 for Kentucky...Kentucky wideout Glenn Holt left the game on a stretcher with a shoulder injury.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
