2005 BIG EAST FOOTBALL SPRING PREVIEW 1 7

The University of South Florida will join

the new look BIG EAST in 2005, giving the

conference a strong football presence in

the state of Florida.

In his first eight years at the school,

head coach Jim Leavitt has guided the Bulls

to a 55-33 record. Leavitt will look to

continue that success in the BIG EAST.

USF has a great deal of talent

returning on both sides of the football.

Seven starters return on offense, while eight

return on the defensive side.

The Bulls had one of Conference

USA’s top running games in 2004, behind

talented back Andre Hall. He is the leading

returning rusher for the BIG EAST and

hopes to run USF to a strong start in the

team’s inaugural season in the

conference.

OFFENSE

The Bulls are one of only four BIG EAST

Conference teams that return their starting

quarterback from a season ago. Junior Pat

Julmiste will be back behind center, after

registering 1,570 yards and seven

touchdowns last season. He also ran for

193 yards and scored nine touchdowns on

the ground. Sophomore Courtney Denson,

a transfer from Auburn, along with highly

touted freshmen Carlton Hill and Matt

Grothe will offer competition to Julmiste.

Sophomore Anthony Severino will add

depth.

An All-Conference USA First Team

running back in 2004, Andre Hall gives the

Bulls a dangerous threat out of the

backfield. As a junior last season, Hall

rushed for 1,357 yards and 11 touchdowns.

His 6.5 yards per carry ranked at the top of

the conference. Hall is also a good

receiver out of the backfield, catching 18

passes for 149 yards and a score in 2004.

Freshman Ricky Ponton will give USF a

talented backup to Hall. Sophomore Siaosi

Uhatafe will take over as the starting

fullback this season with senior Mike

Ruegger also seeing time.

The Bulls return their entire starting

receiving corps from 2004 in junior S.J.

Green, and sophomores Jackie Chambers

and Johnny Peyton. Green and Peyton

each caught 22 passes, with Chambers

hauling in 18 balls. Peyton led the squad

with 469 receiving yards and two scores.

Juniors Courtney White and Darren

Haliburton and freshman Marcus Edwards

will backup at the wide receiver positions.

The tight end position belongs to

compete for time at tight end as well.

The USF offensive line returns both

of its guards from a year ago, but will have

new faces at center and the tackle spots.

At left guard, senior Frank Davis is back in

the starting lineup, while fellow senior

Chris Carothers returns to the starting

right guard position. Senior John Miller

takes over in the middle, with sophomore

Nick Capogna backing up the center

position. The tackle position will be a

young one, with sophomore Frank Davis

on the left side and freshman Marc Dile

starting opposite Davis on the right side.

Senior Antonio Searcy, sophomore Walter

Walker and freshman Jake Griffin will

compete for time at tackle.

DEFENSE

Eight of the 11 starters from 2004

return to the USF defense this season.

Senior Terrence Royal and junior

Tavarious Robinson are back at defensive

end for the Bulls. Robinson will compete

with senior Jon Simmons on the left end

position. Royal posted 38 tackles,

including 13 for loss, and four sacks last

season. In the middle of the line, senior

Tim Jones will take over at the tackle

position, while sophomore Allen Cray will

start at nose tackle. Sophomores Richard

Clebert and Eric Thomas will see backup

duties.

Junior Ben Moffit will man the middle

linebacker position, while junior Stephen

Nicholas returns to start at strong-side

linebacker. Nicholas had an outstanding

2004 campaign, registering 98 tackles,

including 11 tackles for loss. On the weak

side, sophomore Ronnie McCullough

holds the edge, while junior Patrick St.

Louis backs him up. St. Louis finished

third on the team with 66 tackles last

season. Sophomore Josh Balloon and

freshmen Jordan Hicks and Brouce

Mompremier will also see time at the

linebacker spots.

USF returns a great deal of

experience to its secondary. Sophomore

Trae Williams comes back for his second

season as the team’s starting cornerback

on the left side. Sophomore free safety

Danny Verpaele is also returning for his

second year in the starting lineup.

Verpaele had 55 tackles and two sacks in

2004. Williams had 21 tackles and one

interception. Senior D’Juan Brown will take

over as the starting right cornerback. Mike

Jenkins, who also saw starting action last

season, will see a great deal of time as

well. Sophomore A.J. Brant and freshman

Jamaal Jenkins will add depth. At the strong

safety position is senior Johnny Jones,

backed up by junior Jeremy Burnett.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Senior punter Brandon Baker is the

lone returning starter on special teams for

the Bulls. Last season, he finished second

in the conference in punting with a 41.8

average. Freshman Kyle Broson will take

over the placekicking duties in 2005, from

the departed Santiago Gramatica. Junior

Ryan Bourdwau will handle the role of long

snapper. Senior Travis Lipp and

sophomore Trae Williams will share the

return duties.
