Athlon picks U of L No. 8 in preseason

The University of Louisville football team's hopes of high preseason rankings got a boost yesterday when Athlon Sports released its Top 25 with the Cardinals at No. 8.

The magazine, which will be at newsstands June 7, picked the Cards to win the Big East Conference in their inaugural season and tabbed senior offensive lineman Travis Leffew as a second-team All-American.

Athlon rates U of L's running backs and offensive line as the best in the Big East, with the quarterbacks and wide receivers No. 2. Leffew, center Jason Spitz, defensive end Elvis Dumervil, linebacker Brandon Johnson and punt returner Montrell Jones were first-team all-conference picks.

Louisville has been playing football since 1934.

The last four years, they went:

2004 11-1

2003  9-4

2002  7-6

2001 11-2

So, you're correct the last four years they have done well.

But, since 1991, they have had five losing seasons and in two seasons they went 1-10 and 2-9.

They didn't have a single winning record from 1979 - 1987.

So, compare us to Louisville if you'd like but, at least know your facts.

At your beloved Southern Cal.  Since 1999, USC has had only three winning seasons.  Those being the last three.

No doubt about it,  Louisville fans are excited about joining the Big East.  It couldn't have come at a better time for the Cardinal football and men's basketball programs.  Last season's UofL  football team finished 11-1  and  ranked #6.  The men's basketball team went to the Final Four and finished the season ranked #3.  Bring it on Big East !  There's  a  new  big kid on the block and he's  ready to rock & roll !   GO CARDS !
