Grace shy for top award

Rams' star runner-up in Florida Miss Basketball voting; Magley fourth.

STAFF REPORT

In a close vote, Winter Haven High's LaQwesha Gamble edged Riverview High's Shantia Grace by five points for the 2005 Florida Dairy Farmers Miss Basketball award.

Gamble, a forward-center, picked up 143 points and received 9 of 22 first-place votes from a state-wide panel of high school basketball coaches and media. Grace, the Class 6A Player of the Year headed to the University of South Florida on an athletic scholarship, received five first-place votes for 138 points.

Bradenton Christian's Jessica Magley, the Class A Player of the Year, finished fourth with 93 points.

Gamble, a University of Alabama signee, averaged 10.7 points, 14.4 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.1 blocks and 3.9 steals per game as she helped lead her team to the Class 4A state championship.

Grace, the Gatorade and Scholastic Coach & Athletic Director magazine's Florida Girls Basketball Player of the Year, averaged 19 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and seven steals during the 2004-05 season.
