So his total comp for years 1 and 2 is something in the neighborhood of 4.5 million because of his Texas buyout? They're entitled to half of his new salary, right? Looks like a good deal for us. Gives us some time to put away some cash for a huge extension if he does well by year 3.

I think this usually applies to intra-conference transfers or transfers to rival programs. I don't think Texas would block any transfers to USF. Especially if they are an upper class man.

The bottom line is Texas owes him money. The more we offer Strong, the less money Texas owes him.

Texas signed a bad deal and they want to make us pay for it. They can't litigate their way out of this because there's a signed agreement. My guess is that USF and UT are currently working out a compromise. It's obviously in both schools' interest because they don't want us to low ball Strong and subsidize our hire.

So if Strong is getting 2/$10mil from Texas and is due half his salary from us if he signs, why not just sign him $5? Hell, I'll pay his USF salary for the next years and personally write that check to Texas for $2.50.

Yeah, pretty gutless if Taggart were to leave and take our top new head coach target. I doubt that Strong would even go to Oregon play second fiddle when he can be a head coach at USF. Besides, the Oregon Ducks are exactly known for being a top flight defense.

I actually agree with you. We lucked out here. Thanks to Texas' impatience and Oregon pulling the trigger prematurely on Taggart, I think we have lucked out by getting a coach who is at least as good a recruiter, but may be a better defensive schemer. If Taggart bolted in any other year, we likely wouldn't have been this fortunate.
