1. Very valid point. BTW Bobcat... after your OSU comment, I know everything you say is BS. I was in the band in '03... I did like the field show better without the flips... BUT like I said above... the band has other priorities right now. Building the program and building tradition. Either e-mail the director or get over it.
2. I don't know if chalk would be vandalism... but I think "chalking" can only be done by university entities or approved student orgs. Could be wrong... can't back that up. I bet the best they could do is either a harrassment charge or (if a sign was posted) tresspassing with a warning. Either way, I think we have other ways around this. It doesn't show that we are a major school/program if someone chalks I hate you on someone parking spot. Butts n Seats do that... along with letters from each of them saying MAC sucks, if you want him out.
3. BTW: East Carolina has 100% flips on the field... man... they were SO much better than HOT ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D : : : : : : : : : :GoBulls :GoBulls :GoBulls :GoBulls :GoBulls :GoBulls :GoBulls
4. Well, for starters: that link to the CCMB is pretty much where USF copied their funding sources for the band, and we ALL know how well that has done... And do you know what bands are included in that 39% of bands that use flips? Maybe a Band like Ohio State ("the best d@mn band in the land")! Either way... if you have a problem with the way the band works... in any way... e-mail our director at mrobinson@arts.usf.edu. He is always open to suggestions, and gives out his e-mail for that purpose. Although I am not a huge fan of flip folders, HOT is also made up of a large precentage of non-music majors. We also practice fewer hours than most bands right now. We are trying to GROW the band at the moment, getting funding, building members, building alumni, building traditions, etc. The program does strive for excellance, but a perfect band will come in time. Once the band gets out of it's first decade... maybe then it will be able to attempt longer practices and more practice days...... just so we don't have to use flips on the field Note: For non-band dorks.... flip folders are the little black folders with 10 to 30 pages of music in them that a band member has. A folder of music that flips... a flip folder.
5. Well, thats either an ignorent or a hateful question. That does not take money, that takes a lot of extra work on the members part. Most bands will ALWAYS have flip folders, including the top military bands in the country. Wrong. People actually research these things, believe it or not, and only 35% of college bands use flip folders. Most of them are at the Division II or below level. (Visit http://www.ucband.uc.edu/kappakappapsi/compendium/ for all sorts of fascinating information about college bands.) I am not aware of more than a handful of Division I marching band that uses flip folders. I'm sure there are some, but they're likely schools like Troy or something. Rutgers and WVU use flip folders when not inside the stadium-- but do we really want to emulate those guys? No one I've seen in the MAC uses them, though Ball State's band might want to consider it -- they could use the help. Rice uses them, but that's because the M.O.B. is a scatter band open to the public that's far more about onfield antics than being good musicians. I watched nearly every bowl game, watching the band to see if I could verify my suspicions, and while not every school's band got enough face time for me to be 100% positive, I sure know I never saw any flip folders for any other team. I love this university, I love our band, but we gotta get rid of the flip folders. Do a few google searches. Other message boards openly mock us. I never played in a band in my life, I just happened to attend a few schools with top-level marching bands, and I'm proud of them, and I'd like to be proud of USF's too. Stay off this thead... we can talk on the one I created just for you.
6. Well, thats either an ignorent or a hateful question. That does not take money, that takes a lot of extra work on the members part. Most bands will ALWAYS have flip folders, including the top military bands in the country. I might agree that having them on the field isn't great, but they are needed (for the band's large number of stands songs) for the stands. Either way, I'll quote from BleacherBull on Jan 10th, 2007, 5:43pm: Start your fight elsewhere please.
7. Amazing stuff guys. If you want the direct link to the donation video/form.. click the green box in my signature below! I hope someone doubles my $ when I start donating! (my donating requires paying off loans that paid for current band classes... haha)
8. Keep in mind too that the cost of actually attending school at USF is on the low side (at least it was when I attended). So, you may be spending a bit more on room and board (are meals part of the cost of on campus living?) but overall I would be surprised if the relative cost still wasn't below average. Florida, in general, does have the lowest resident tuition in the nation! BUT, we have an F rating for affordability. From the national report: FINANCIAL BURDEN TO PAY FOR COLLEGE VARIES WIDELY AMONG DIFFERENT INCOME FAMILIES IN THE STATE Those who are striving to reach or stay in the middle classâ€â€the 40% of the population with the lowest incomesâ€â€earn on average $18,992 each year. * If a student from such a family were to attend a community college in the state, their net cost to attend college would represent about 40% of their income annually: Tuition, room, and board: $8,800 Financial aid received: –$1,228 Net college cost: $7,572 Percent of income: 40% * If the same student were to attend a public four-year college in the state, their net cost to attend college would represent about 39% of their income annually: Tuition, room, and board: $9,891 Financial aid received: –$2,531 Net college cost: $7,360 Percent of income: 39% other information can be found at: http://measuringup.highereducation.org/reports/stateProfileNet.cfm?myYear=2006&statename=Florida&cat=AFF OVERALL The STATE needs to develop ways to figure out the "cost of education." The Florida Student Association (all 11 public university student governments are members) will be pushing for this within a month.
9. Wow... I forgot what a high school games feels like... guess I'll remember soon http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium_pictures/north_america/united_states/florida/fort_lauderdale_lockhart.shtml
10. First I would say that it's called an exception, there are always exceptions to every rule and I think age and/or marital status probably qualify. Second, many colleges have actual on campus apartment homes mainly for upper level students but would also be perfect for older studends and married couples. That could be something USF could look into later on. What I find funny though (not from your comment but just overall with threads like these) is that I hear so much anger anytime someone refers to USF as a communter school, there is thread after thread about the lack of that traditional (define it how you like) college environment (ie...we must have an OCS to provide this) and how there is no student life available to students etc, etc.... but the second someone talks about a requirement of the students that just make things less cushy for them there is all this cry against it. IMO, if you want a thriving campus environment then be prepared to make a few sacrafices to get it or be happy with the label of a commuter school. Personally I'd say that after spending my first couple years in what I would define as a "traditional" school I would argue that the added cost and discomfort of a dorm is nothing compared to the incredible time I had and it is too bad that students at USF don't get the same experience. Exactly. Very simple guys. Our admin wants us to be more of a "traditional metropolitan university." Everyone here should be in support of this. The dorms do not cost that much. Students will need to live with the cost of quality. Within 10 years, USF will see freshman required to stay on campus. Within 10 years we will have (like I have said elsewhere) a serious consideration for an OCS, a funding effort underway for an OCS, or we will have an existing OCS. Also within the ten year plan includes an amazing increase in buildings, reseach ability and programs, academic excellance standards, and physical/mental support for athletics. All of these things... AND MUCH MORE... are included in the ten year campus master plan found at: http://usfweb2.usf.edu/FacilitiesPlan/Campus%20Planning/plan_draft.html C'mon guys... I've been showing you this stuff for two years! Q: Why would parking fees go up? A: The ten year plan includes 8+ parking garages due to student/staff increases and exisiting lot displacement. The cost money and the state can't foot the whole bill. Q: Why would on-campus housing rates go up? A: The ten year plan includes the building of 4 new multi-story res halls near magnola and the demolition of the andros complex the put up new multi-story res halls to: 1) support increases in the need for beds, 2) support the freshman on campus idea, 3) attempt to build a sense of tradition and pride on campus, 4) to give more students the chance to take in the great on-campus environment. Q: Will students that live (with parents) within a certain radius of campus, or are of a certain age need to live on campus? A: I doubt it. Most universties give a +/- 50 mile exemption and exemptions for other reasons.
11. I would like to see that more often in the bookstore... tell them where the discounted USF t-shirts/hats are next time
12. I don't know who... but I know admissions admited at least one football player for the spring... Wish I knew names... Whoever it was, admin was bending over backwards approving stuff...
13. Thats funny... It's Saturday boys... get out... anyway... time to go to hooters
14. USF and Tampa Bay has quite a few top spots in Florida now. With Charlie living just accross the bay, no wonder he remembers us...
15. Good point. I know it has A LOT to do with the "winning season." Just look at what happened in 2005 when we were looking at beating WVU (before the Uconn mess).
16. Here is what I find problematic with this explanation, according to the list here are the past two years attendence: 2005 - 7,527 2006 - 4,773 To me it is obvious that the section was much better attended this year then last yet it shows a drop of nearly 3,000 students (almost in half) So then we have to assume we all of a sudden got 3,000+ non students (nearly the turnout of the students themselves) into that section? I just find that really hard to believe....a mistake in reporting one of those two years seems a much more plausable explanation. I agree, something is not right. But, overall.... what methods (other than the team winning a title, getting an OCS, or "flyers") can be implimented? From any standpoint... SG, Athletic, University? Ideas?
17. The exec branch (i.e.: Frank, Faran, me, others) didn't "help" Charlie. Did someone in the Senate leak it to him? Maybe, but I don't know that for sure. It WAS PUBLIC RECORD, as the project had to be approved by the Senate. And who said I wasn't involved with it? By the second day, honestly the same mistake happened. People did not think that many students would come back. It is as simple as that. Charlie DID NOT get any more info than ANYONE else. Seriously. Nor was he the only one that did that. Other groups did the same thing, just not on the scale Charlie did. The feminist org? Do your HW... the lragest group on campus is the Black Student Union (800-1000+?), then I think the College Republicans (400+), etc... We have A LOT of student involved in organizations, and they are the ones that come out often. In all, we have over 400 or so orgs. http://usfweb2.usf.edu/StudentActivities/stu_org_list.asp?PrimaryCategory=All&SecondaryCategory=All&FormSubmitted=Yes&FormErrors=No Needless to say... you are changing this thead to be a hate bash on SG. Bringing up the ticket sales is fine... but the intent was to, like I said before: 1) to get as many students to travel as possible (college experiance) 2) to install a want to travel and attend athletic events which will assist in the building of our athletic program (the quota). Now, I am going to drop this little conversation. We should get back to looking at ways to IMPROVE student attendance, which was my intent in creating this thead. Not to mention, I need to go to the office now. I know, even if I am, in your eyes I won't be doing anything productive. Good day.
18. Jim... stop posting and go start a USF benifit organization that can fundraise and assist the university! Your ideas are amazing... don't waste them here!
19. I'm not sure. I have the figures somewhere. I'll be in my office tomorrow, I'll see if I can find them. You see, this would be cronyism. I promise you I'll clock out while looking for them!
20. I think you're in the wrong place for this sort of thing. This is about attracting students to USF athletic events, not bashing SG. (If you don't like what happened or how things are run, SG meets Tuesday nights at 7:00pm. Also think about running for office.) Elections are coming up. Go to http://www.sg.usf.edu for an application.
21. I'll put it to you stright from the office. I have worked in SG for 2 years, first as the Academic Affairs Director and this year as the External Affairs Director (lobbyist). Everyone in SG understands the importance of the $9.3 million we "control." It gets spent well. Yes, mistakes happen all the time. The UCF tickets did not go as well as we wished. Although, our main mission WAS to get as many students as possible to the away game. We were successful, as UCF had the highest away game attendance, and it was pretty fun! It was a quota thing. We run all kinds of give aways and events with little turnout. For once, A LOT of people did want the service. In the end... we learned from the mistake. The bowl trip travel packages were limited to 4 per person (4 to a room). Athletics was nice enough to pay for the tickets this time around, and they had a great plan that will be used again if we ever do it again. They origionally wanted to use the tickets to drive organization recruitment (not just greek, but all orgs). That is why organizations and greeks got wind of it early. Not to mention, they are organized groups who are involved everywhere. Of course it was easy for them to do what they did! My point. Don't judge everything SG does on a messed up, but somewhat successful project. Those students who serve you do much more than you think. Everything from the computer lab clerk to the lobbyists like myself to the comptrollers who sort and handle the $9.3. My question is... how do you know cronyism and nepotism run deep in SG? Have you ever been around the office, or are you taking the Oracle's word for it? I agree, cronyism is present to a degree. It is present everywhere. Have you ever done something to help a friend? I bet you have! You will always remember someone you know or a friend before someone you don't know. That doesn't mean we make decisions based only on those friendships. AND, you are right, you should never make "big decisions" based on cronyism. I am involved in our top leadership and, to my knowledge, those decisions are not based on cronyism. The only objectives for the UCF tickets, for example, were: 1) to get as many students to travel as possible (college experiance) 2) to install a want to travel and attend athletic events which will assist in the building of our athletic program (the quota). Both of those were met. Now that we know that students will jump on something like that... like I said above, we will use a better system. If you notice... the objective was not to get as many greeks to the game. Never was. That would have been cronyism. The objective was to BnS (Butts n Seats).
22. Until one section ANYWHERE filles up...
23. BTW: We say St. Pete, Sarastoa, and Lakeland can not, or don't come to games? They are part of the established 5 county bay area... not far to drive. It's not like it's UF's south florida campus (as far as distance from stadium).
