  1. You have to think of it this way. Even before the season started, they (the coaching staff) knew it was going to be a rebuilding season. That doesn't mean they didn't try their hardest to get things done though. The coaching staff knew they didn't have a solid quarterback and they knew they would have to start a lot of young kids. Injuries forced the staff to go young and inexperienced in the secondary. A lot of things happend this year. You have to think that next year is the year where everyone needs to prove themselves. Hopefully the QB situation will be settled, there will be more experience on the team. The freshman will surley have matured more then expected because of the playing time they had. I believe the coaching staff will have next year to prove that this last season in C-USA was a rebuilding year. If we get off to a slow start, there could be a few changes right away. If it all works out, i hope every coach gets on this board and says you just just need to trust us. That's what i think is goin on.
  2. I don't think it was the loss to Duke that impressed them (which they did hold their own by the way) Our guards were a lot for them to handle but their size was just too much for us. On the other hand, MTSU is a very good team in women's basketball. They made it to the second round of the NCAA tournament and won their conference tournament. When the ladies play UCONN, it will be a lot closer then the Duke game. They are a lot smaller then Duke is and their guards are not as experienced. It should be a fun year for women's basketball. Just wait till next year whe the new recruits can suit up and help this team.
  3. USF Women’s Basketball Receives Votes In ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll Tampa, FL (Nov. 17, 2004) – The USF women’s basketball team received eight votes in the most recent ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll, released Monday night, marking the first time in school history that they earned the distinction. The Bulls are ranked 40th in the country according to the full list. USF is one of six Conference USA schools listed in either the top 25 or receiving votes. DePaul is ranked No. 20, while TCU (39), Houston (25), Marquette (9), USF, and Louisville (4) received votes. In addition, the Bulls are the highest ranked team in the state of Florida. Florida and Miami received six and three votes respectively. USF has started the season with a 1-1 record. The Bulls defeated Middle Tennessee State, 70-62, in the first round of the Sportsview.tv Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) on November 12. The Lady Raiders, picked to win the Sun Belt Conference and advance to the NCAA Tournament in March, had received 25 votes in the initial preseason coaches poll last week. With the loss to USF, MTSU received just two votes in this week’s poll. USF faced No. 6/6 Duke in the quarterfinal round dropping the decision to the Blue Devils 82-50. Duke, who plays No. 10/10 Notre Dame in the WNIT semifinals tonight, stayed at No. 6 in this week’s poll. “Anytime you can get national recognition it’s great for the program but more for the young ladies who have worked so hard,†said Fernandez, “One of our goals in the offseason was to get ready for the WNIT, and through that hard work we got a good win at Middle Tennessee State. Unfortunately in the second round, against a great team like Duke, we got into an offensive lull and you can’t do that against top teams at that level. I really think that this (receiving votes) gives us some respect after being picked to finish eighth in Conference USA this year in the league’s preseason poll.†The Bulls will be back in action on Friday, November 19 against Texas A&M in the first round of the Miami Jam at Florida International University. The winner of that game will face the winner of the FIU vs. Bucknell match-up in the title game on Saturday, November 20 at 7 p.m. The two losing teams will meet in the consolation round on Saturday at 5 p.m. All-America candidate Jessica Dickson (Ocala, FL) leads the Bulls in scoring averaging 17 points, while Anedra Gilmore (Jacksonville, FL) and Ezria Parsons (Bushnell, FL) are netting 10 points apiece per game. Parsons is also grabbing a team high 10 rebounds per outing. USF will open its home schedule on Wednesday, November 24 at 7 p.m. against Army. The Bulls will start play in the BIG EAST Conference, which has been one of the premier women’s basketball conferences in America, at the beginning of the 2005-06 academic year. The BIG EAST has won five of the last six national championships and six in the last 10 seasons. Connecticut – in addition to this year’s championship – also took the title in 1995, 2000, 2002, and 2003, and Notre Dame took the 2001 championship. In addition, Rutgers also advanced to the Women's Final Four in 2000. All USF games can be heard live on www.GoUSFBulls.com with Amanda Miller handling the play-by-play. 14. Skillman, NJ. - University of South Florida sophomore Gabriela Duch received a preseason ranking of 97 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Monday. In her freshman year, Duch compiled a record of 19-13, playing primarily at the No. 1 position. Last year, she was ranked as high as 93.
  15. TAMPA, FLA. - The University of South Florida women’s tennis team will play in its first competition of the 2003-04 season when it hosts the USF Invitational starting at 10 a.m. on Sept. 23 at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts. During the three-day invitational, the Bulls will be facing Troy State (Thurs 10 a.m.), UCF (Fri. 10 a.m.) and FIU (Sat. 10 a.m.). In the two years head coach Gigi Fernandez has been with the program, the Bulls have not been able to collect wins against UCF or FIU. “We are looking to redeem those losses against these tough teams,†Fernandez said. “Our team is getting stronger each year and I think this will be the year that we start beating these Florida schools.†During fall competition, Fernandez keeps a close eye on her team to see where she will position them in the spring line-up. “I like to be involved in tournaments as early as possible to get the freshmen involved in what college tennis is all about,†Fernandez said.†It also gives practice a bigger sense of urgency when you know competition is lurking ahead.†Joining a team of five returning members will be Liz Cruz, a freshman from San Salvador, El Salvador. “I will be looking very closely at our freshman (Liz Cruz), as she is the only player I don’t know very well,†Fernandez commented. “After this tournament, I will have a fairly good idea of where she will play in the line-up.†In other news, sophomore Gabriela Duch received a preseason ranking of 97 by the ITA on Monday. This is the second-straight year she has received a preseason ranking. Last year Duch was ranked as high as 93 while going 19-13 playing primarily in the No. 1 singles position.

  17. Louisville, Ky - Third-seeded USF shutdown No. 6 East Carolina, 7-1, in game two of the C-USA Softball Tournament on Thursday. The Bulls claimed a sizeable lead early on after a six-run inning in the first frame and tacked on another when Kattrina Dowd connected on her sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth. The Bulls scored six runs off three hits and four costly ECU errors in the first inning. Krista Holle doubled to right center to pick up two RBI, while Rena Rodriguez and Samantha Ray chipped in with singles to right and left field, respectively. Dowd widened the gap for USF in the fourth frame with a solo shot over center field. East Carolina posted its only run of the game in the top of the fifth. Mandi Nichols reached first on a single to right field and scored when Leigh Savoy reached on a USF error. Freshman Kasey Cash picked up her fourth win of the season. She struck out five Pirates and allowed just two hits. Nichols (1-for-2) and Dany’ele Hill (1-for-3) combined to post ECU’s two hits. The Bulls will face No. 2 seeded Louisville tonight at 6:30 p.m
  18. http://gobulls.usf.edu/Sports/News.aspi=735&s=Softball TAMPA, Fla. (May 9, 2004)-The University of South Florida closed out its regular season with two come-from-behind wins over intra-state rival Stetson, Sunday afternoon at the USF Softball Complex. On a day where the Bulls honored four seniors, it was an underclassman that came through in the clutch. In game one Krista Holle tied the game at 1-1 and then in the bottom of the seventh in game two, she delivered the game winning single. USF went on to win 4-1 and 4-3. USF improved its record to 55-10 on the year and 33-3 at home. In game one, the Hatters struck first after three scoreless innings in the fourth with back-to-back doubles by starting pitcher Blake Hooreblake and Carrie Cruit. Until Krista Holle singled up the middle in the fifth, Stetson starter Hooreblake retired 11 straight Bulls batters. Holle moved up to second on a Sarah Watson ground out and then to third on a Samantha Ray single. Kattrina Dowd tied the game up at 1-1 with a single up the middle that scored Holle. The Bulls then pulled off a textbook double steal that resulted in an error by the shortstop covering third that allowed Ray to score and Dowd to third. Shelly Riker followed it up by laying down a bunt down the first baseline that scored Dowd on the play. The Bulls added another run in the sixth on a sac fly by Holle that scored Stewart. Stewart doubled earlier in the inning and advanced to third on a passed ball. USF starter Leigh Ann Ellis picked up her 38th win of the season pitching all seven innings, only giving up those two doubles in the fourth inning, walking one and striking out eight. In game two, Stetson jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first after Hooreblake singled through the right side that scored Brittani Houghton from third. The Bulls responded in the bottom half of the inning when Shelly Riker reached second on a throwing error by the pitcher, moved up to third on a Liwag single and then scored on a Christie Chapman single to left field. USF took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single by Riker that scored Ray from second. Bull’s starter Kasey Cash, found herself in a jam in the top of the fourth with runners on first and second, pinch hitter Carolyn Garliepp singled to right center that scored pinch runner Ashley Aaron, to tie the game at 2-2. In the top of the fifth, Ellis entered the game in relief of Cash with the bases loaded and one out. Shawna Wiggs scored on an illegal pitch by Ellis, giving the Hatters a 3-2 lead. Ellis went on to strikeout the last two Stetson hitters of the inning. The Bull’s loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth but could not manage to tie up the ball-game. In the bottom of the seventh, Liwag started things off with a single through the right side and then moved up to second on a wild pitch. Holly Groves singled to the shortstop, Chapman followed with a single to right center to load the bases for Stewart. Stewart then flied out to right field but an arid throw by the right fielder allowed Liwag to tie the game at 3-3. Holle won the game for the Bulls with a single to right field that scored Groves from third. Ellis picked up her second win of the day and her fifth this week to run her record to 39-4 on the year. USF will now wait to see where the Bulls will be seeded for the Conference USA tournament in Louisville, Ky. which starts on Thursday.
  19. (May 6, 2004) The University of South Florida’s transition to the BIG EAST Conference during its final season in Conference USA will be given national attention in bookend football games on ESPN this fall. The network provides a glimpse of USF’s future in the BIG EAST with its broadcast of the Bulls’ season opener against Pittsburgh in a game that will move to September 6 at 4:30 p.m. in Raymond James Stadium. Additionally, ESPN has picked up USF’s season and C-USA finale against Memphis, also in Raymond James Stadium. The Memphis game presently remains scheduled for November 27 but could be moved to Friday November 26. The two games give USF three nationally televised games with the October 22 game at Louisville already slated for ESPN2. “USF is moving into a new neighborhood and the increased level of national exposure is just one tangible benefit that comes with that,†says USF associate director of athletics Tom Veit. “These will be two very exciting holiday weekends for all of our fans to celebrate USF Football. “We appreciate Pittsburgh’s cooperation in allowing for a date change, something that isn’t always easy to accomplish. We’re already enjoying an outstanding relationship with our future conference partner, and we are extremely excited about building upon that partnership.†The Pittsburgh game marks the return date of the Bulls’ 35-26 win at Heinz Field, September 8, 2001. USF began its football program in 1996 and played its Inaugural Season in 1997. The Bulls became members of Conference USA in 2003 and finished in a three-way tie for third place. The Bulls are 51-26 in their seven seasons of football and make the move to the BIG EAST in 2005.
