December 16, 2005 Dear College of Engineering Alumnus: On behalf of the USF College of Engineering, I would like to thank you for your continued support and take this moment to wish you and your family the very best during this holiday season. As many of you are aware, USF has entered into a new era with its entry into the Big East conference. While much of the news related to this event has centered on our athletic programs, this step also provides us in Engineering with an excellent set of academic peers and benchmarks. With this in mind we have prepared the attached sheet which compares where our College stands with respect to the other Colleges of Engineering in the Big East. Some of the highlights of this comparison are as follows: Our College is one of eleven (11) Colleges of Engineering in the Big East. Ten of the eleven, including our College, are housed within Doctoral Research Extensive Universities. All of the Colleges of Engineering in the Big East have significant “head starts†on us with some having been in existence for over 100 years.  Despite our relative youth among this peer group, our overall (undergraduate plus graduate) enrollment numbers for fall 2004, show us already to be the largest College of Engineering in the Big East. We also ranked first in the conference in total degrees awarded during the 2003/04 academic year.  We have made a substantial effort over the last four years to increase our external research grants and contracts and particularly those from federal sources. This effort has already placed us fourth in the Big East in Total Research Expenditures and sixth in Federal Research Expenditures. Of even greater significance is that we are the fastest growing Big East College of Engineering in both total and federal research expenditures over the four year comparison period.  When we focus strictly on our graduate numbers we find that we are fifth in the conference in graduate student enrollment and sixth overall in the number of PhD degrees that we awarded in 2003/04. While our impact in both of these areas is substantial, it is clear that additional efforts in these two areas are required to continue to enhance both our regional and national stature. Overall, we rank between 3rd and 4th among our peer Big East Colleges of Engineering. As you might imagine, we are looking forward to a “Bowl game†invitation in the not too distant future as well!!  I trust that this comparison provides you with an even stronger sense of pride in being a graduate of USF’s College of Engineering. I also hope that it will serve as additional motivation to continue to support your College as we address our future challenges. Please be assured that we appreciate your support and the vital role it plays in the achievement of our objectives. Our pledge is to always strive to make the “E†of Engineering truly stand for “excitement†and in so doing provide our students with increasing opportunities for their future development and success. Thank you for being such loyal partners in this outstanding endeavor.  Sincerely, Louis A. Martin-Vega, Ph.D., P.E. Professor and Dean
