  1. I don't think people realize the condition Strong left the program in.
  2. Fair point, which begs the question why is that the goal? I agree we shouldn't have a revolving door and have no issues with the CJS extension - he took over a mess and while he likely needs a longer runway, some tangible improvement would be nice to see. The Gregory extension is baffling - he is in Year 5. We know who he is. How does a guy who should have been fired after last season, then starts 5-7 with one of the worst shooting teams in MBB get a 3 year extension??
  3. It's the same way they destroyed the football program.
  4. The results have not changed because the priority isn't winning. The contract extensions and Kelly's own words confirm that. Once we see winning prioritized in the form of what coaches we hire/retain, then there may be hope. Until then don't expect results to change over the next 3-4 years.
  5. I agree, but why can't he do both? Does he really need to extend a bad coach so he doesn't have to be bothered by it, so he can focus solely on the other stuff? Participation.
  6. Gregory could be the first D1 MBB coach to have back-to-back single digit win seasons and get an extension.
  7. I just think by extending everyone, Kelly doesn't have to be bothered with any of it now. He can instead focus on fundraising, the OCS and getting into the Big 12. I know he said coaches would be accountable, but in CBG's case how low can the bar be? He likely should have been fired in the offseason for performance AND the scandal, but instead he sticks around, goes 5-7 and gets a 3-year extension?
  8. He is pretty far removed from any meaningful success. After 5 years of pretty horrific offense here , I'd prefer to see us take a chance on a low or mid-major coach with RECENT success, than extend a guy who can't coach.
  9. Has he been successful? Looking at his Wikipedia page he hasn't finished higher than 7th in his conference since 2009. Brian Gregory - Wikipedia
  10. Its a bit of a strawman argument IMO - bad coaches in the short term typically turn into bad coaches long term, CJF is an exception. Plus in WBB there is no pressure - its not a revenue sport and you can afford to let things play out. If the argument for extending Gregory is to bring up another coach then he has no argument. Talk about Gregory's strengths and accomplishments that warrant an extension. No one was coming to take Gregory away and there are dozens of better coaches in the low to mid-majors that him. He got a gift from Kelly.
  11. That's a pretty big commitment to make to coaches just to give yourself an excuse to call a press conference and talk about other things.
  12. That's a pretty big commitment for the sake of continuity. North Korea has continuity but I wouldn't want to live there.
  13. Kind of agree on the lazy part. Seems like an overreaction to address continuity concerns. Seems like he is mitigating one risk but potentially creating many more.
  14. To be objective I think it has to broken down based on categories: On field results: D- (both major programs are among the worst in DI) Talent Identification: D (Scott was a good hire at the time, but extending Gregory is unforgivable) Scheduling: A (home football schedule against P5 schools is the best of the G5) Student-Athlete Support: C (would rank higher if the racial concerns raised by basketball players was handled better) Fundraising: D (USF generates the lowest revenues among AAC schools where that data is available) Facilities Development: C (plus for football upgrades, but still lagging overall behind like schools) Branding: F (USF athletics is viewed as negatively in the Tampa Bay area as at any time in the last 30 years) Overall: D
  15. Extending everyone 3 years gives him the chance to focus solely on facilities and the Big 12 invite.
  16. Maybe we don't have a Brian Gregory problem, but instead we have a Michael Kelly problem?
