  1. If Hill is back like expected, the DL will be straight. It could be one of better Dlines in years in terms of performance. The scary thing is that 2016 could be even better. Agreed, the 2016 Dline has the potential to be something special.

  3. IDK... He's 6'2 230 and will likely play around 235 next year. The only year we had DEs starting where they were both 250 pounds or more was in 2009. That was because in Selvie's senior year he got up to 245-250 and Pierre Paul came in at 260. Outside of that season, we've always been between 230-250 at the DE position. We'd see a couple of heavy guys on the roster who didn't play, but by your standards we've only had a few legit DEs starting in our schools history. I mean Selvie likely was not 250 his senior year and he appeared to be a step slower anyway. Size does not a college DE make. I'm reminded of Bruce Irvin at West Virginia playing DE at 6'3 235.... he gave us fits. I think Black can be just as effective. I also think this system is different than what CJL ran and has different demands from guys. So far I like the system. At least we won't look like we've never seen the spread before this year. I've checked looked at teams that run the 4-2-5 effectively and this is about the size for the average "Bull" (what USF calls it now) position. One end is 250 plus and the other is between 225-235. They do this because he drops into coverage sometimes. Also it appears we have packages with bigger DEs. I'm not getting too caught up in the depth chart because there are other guys coming in that may contribute. Specifically Gonzales... So we'll see how the DL unfolds. I think they will be strong... we're in a good place on defense I feel. To add to this Black is playing a 9 technique and doesn't need to be 250+ to do that effectively in this scheme. As a matter of fact the CJ Johnson who played the same spot at Ole Miss this past season played it very effectively at 6' 2" 225lbs, in the SEC. What you want out of the Bull spot is pretty much a rush LB who puts their hand in the dirt and attacks the edge with their athleticism. What you want physically out of a 9 tech end is way different than what you want out of say a 6 or 7 technique end. Exactly. In the past we were able to get those big athletic guys flying around and making plays. I think this defense offers that opportunity again. We have some question marks but not as many as we've had in the past three years, really four, so I'm comfortable with that. I think the defense will be solid. I think they will actually be pretty good. We're looking at the two deep but on the DLine we've seen tons of packages this fall. Some where Bronson moves inside to the tackle. Others were some combination of Lee, Bronson, and Love at the DE. Also it looks like Hill will be back with the team so that will add to the DE position. That with Black, Bullock, and Jackson should have us in a good spot. We always focus on the two deep when we go much deeper than that on defense. Also that guy Daniel Awoleke is going to play. He's a specimen and he had a good spring, I know he's a walk-on, but that guy is big, fast, and as strong as bull. Also I think the special teams should be really good this year. I mean the coverage teams. When you have a deep defense, you end up having great special teams. I'm just wondering who'll emerge as the KR/PR. We have some speed now.

  5. Rich Rodriguez on the spring game “We’ll just get through it, have a little fun, let the fans get entertained, call a couple of bad plays, get booed, and then move on.†I think the coaches have a firm understanding of what the spring game is. Fans on the other hand jump to conclusions about how good the team will play based on it. Even though it's not an accurate indicator as to how good or bad the team will be. For violation and giggles I watched a slew of spring games on the big 1G network and they were not that great. Watched a few ACC teams Syracuse was one, and the games were bad. They were spring games. I don't think we can gauge this team until the individual talent is playing as a team with their proper units. We had one of the new guys, McCants, who was injured. He ran for the first time at full speed since his ACL and ran 4.6 40 yard dash standing up in the WR position and not from the typical track start. He has some wheels! Looking forward to seeing him play. First time running full-speed: ran a 4.6 40yd from a stand-up Receiver stance! nothing but God #J.W.O.I. (@Yung_Ocho8)
  6. I do think it was in response to that. The guy Joey has covered USF since Greg left and he really knows this team. He knows it a lot better than most. In the past he's been critical of the performances so I find it refreshing he has an at least meaningful outlook towards next year. Maybe meaningful isn't the best choice of words.. optimistic is better.
  7. Wow... I was surprised to see my name and this. This is a cool feature.
  8. Has more talent than anyone that played for us last year. Would you say you're sold on Egbunu? Is he the real deal? He's had his ups and downs, but he may very well have already left USF as the best C in school history. That says more about our program than about Egbunu. The statement I made was correct, however he was not the best QB in USF History. Sadly he is prob top 5 though. 1. Grothe 2. Blackwell 3. Daniels 4. Julmiste 5. Tie with a bunch of ppl including Ronnie Banks, Matt White, Eveld, etc... I see I should have clarified my response a bit ... Allow me... I reread what you said and changed it. I'm slow sometimes, I read it again and edited the response no null because I got what you were saying. I agree with that. "Triple B" that is.

  10. Antigua is methodical. He has a system and he recruits players specific to that system. It's so much different than what Stan did. These long rangy players who can run and shoot. He loves athleticism. I think we could have a decent team next season. We will be a lot more competitive with Peters at the guard. I saw him and I'm not sure he's just 6'3. I'm 6'1 and he towered over me, I though he was at least 6'4. Has long arms and big hands. Watched him shoot around and my jaw dropped. He is money. Has a pretty shot and he has handles. I can't wait to see him in an actual game. He looked the same height as Troy. I'm excited about next basketball season. I'd personally like to see Nunez added. He's better than what we lost in Clayton...
  11. Angel Nunez Rivals: http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recruiting/player-Angel-Nunez-84083 He could be a temp replacement for Montero who will be coming for 2016. We definitely need the depth for SF. See his HS stats here: http://www.gocards.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/nunez_angel00.html 14 pts 8 rbs per game in high school. Why do they make you pay to see his film? Some guys they show and others they don't.
  12. http://www.tampabay.com/blogs/bulls/five-usf-spring-football-observations/2224480 In lieu of subjecting you to a knee-jerk reaction from USF's March 28 spring game, we chose to delay our assessment for 10 or so days. We wanted every observation we took in during spring camp to digest properly, so we could offer more prudent analysis. We wanted time to pass, allowing perspective to blossom. Who are we kidding? We've been so swarmed with March Madness, we're just now getting around to it. With no further adieu, here are our top five observations (in no particular order) from the Bulls' spring workouts. 1. Jamie Byrd was born to play the 'husky.' Byrd expended a lot of energy last season sprinting from his safety spot to make tackles at the defense's second level. Now, he'll often line up there as the nickel back in new coordinator Tom Allen's 4-2-5 look. During spring drills, the 5-foot-11, 184-pound Pasco High alumnus often could be spotted playing tight man coverage at the line, and even rushing off the edge. For someone endowed with fleetness and ferocious pop, it seems an ideal position. "I like to make a lot of tackles anyway," said Byrd, a nickel back during his two years at TCU, "so it's kind of more of a linebacker/safety thing." 2. Flowers can fling it. Count us among the throng hardly overwhelmed by QB Quinton Flowers' accuracy and velocity last fall. Over the course of 14 workouts and one glorified scrimmage, however, our opinion changed. The Bulls' projected starter, who completed only eight passes in five games last fall, can bring it. Again, we're not totally sold on his touch and still are waiting to see him flourish in a real game, but his ability to stretch the defense on occasion in practices was among the spring surprises. "He knows when to put air on the ball," WR Rodney Adams said. "He knows when to dart it." 3. Ignore the spring game results. If the social media fallout was any indication, Bulls fans were mostly aghast at the results (one touchdown) of USF's intrasquad scrimmage. Our response: Take the game for what it was, then take a deep breath. It meant nothing. Zilch. Bad blocking? The offensive line was split into two teams, and veteran G Thor Jozwiak (shoulder) didn't even play. Fewer than 480 total yards amassed? The Bulls used a ton of zone-read stuff, and quarterbacks were ruled down essentially upon contact. Three picks? One was a halftime Hail Mary. We're not suggesting USF resembled a bowl-eligible team at the spring game; far from it. But gauging the trajectory of a season on those four quarters (two of them with a running clock) is just plain foolish. 4. Mike White will be missed. While he's more agile than many presume, White didn't seem as suited for USF's new spread scheme as his counterparts. That said, his recent announcement that he's transferring means the Bulls have lost the best arm on their roster. White started three of the Bulls' four victories last season, and saved them from a humiliating loss at SMU by coming off the bench to engineer a 75-yard TD drive in the fourth quarter. He's bright and likeable, and while he induced more than his share of cringes with his periodic struggles, he nonetheless gave USF its best chance to win in 2014. White will land at another Division I program, bank on it. Meantime, the Bulls' zone-read system had better work. Their odds suddenly seem longer if they must throw to get back in a game. 5. New formation = new fire We'll repeat the warning: Don't get too absorbed by the results -- offensively or defensively -- of the spring game. But hoot and holler all you wish about how the defense...well...hooted and hollered. Clearly, Allen has reinvigorated a unit with his zeal, not to mention a scheme designed to enable the Bulls to better employ their athleticism and perhaps stifle a few spread offenses. Allen led the coaching staff in fist pumps per practice, and new cornerbacks coach Alonzo Hampton wasn't far behind. "Enthusiasm is contagious, and having Tom over there, you see how it just filters down throughout everyone," Coach Willie Taggart said. "The defensive coaches, the players, they're running to the football, they're excited when they get there. They're gang-tackling, which we want a lot of. And I think a lot of it comes with just Tom's personality...and keeping it where it's not very complicated so they can play fast." Bound to break through? Five guys who showed the potential to have a breakthrough season WR A.J. Legree If Flowers or Steven Bench need to toss a jump ball downfield, this Kentucky transfer's their man. Legree won a state high jump title at Fort White High with a 6-foot-10 effort. WR Chase Whitehead The college landscape is littered with guys who shined in spring and vanished in the fall. We can't say if Whitehead, a diminutive walk-on from the Panhandle, will be among them. But darned if he didn't seem to make a big play daily, including the spring contest (game-high six catches). "The guy's hard-nosed, the guy plays hard, lifts hard," Bench said. "You can't keep him off the field because all he does is...make plays." DT Deadrin Senat This 300-pound sophomore is a veritable Todd Chandler clone. At times this spring, Senat seemed impossible to budge on the inside. TB Darius Tice Granted, this sturdy junior (5-10, 206) will struggle to get handoffs behind Marlon Mack, but Taggart at times this spring was effusive in his praise of Tice (245 career rushing yards). Don't be shocked if he pushes D'Ernest Johnson for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart. TE Elkanah Dillon Those etching veteran Sean Price's name atop the tight end depth chart had better use pencil. Dillon, a rangy redshirt freshman (6-5, 239), has the athleticism and size to supplant him. His three catches in the spring game included a 49-yarder on a downfield throw from Flowers. ================== This is from the Tampa Times about the spring
  13. I think that was the FSU game, wasn't it? He rushed for like a 100 yards, too. I could be wrong, too. Yes. Gives me a glimmer of hope if Flowers can come close to replicating those rushing numbers. I'll say this. Having seen him play in person he is really fast and shifty. I think his legs will keep us in games but I'm of the notion he will also be an effective passer for this system because of his legs.
  14. I think what Skip Holtz did to the fans is just as bad as what he did to the team, Woolard too. I think we have gotten conditioned to expect mediocrity. We expect the worst. I mean who can blame us given what we've seen from our men's sports. But I'm not letting that blind me as I think some of us have. I hope nobody minds me giving my perspective. Just reading what people write on this site, both good and bad, we still have some passionate fans. We have a fan base waiting for a team they can believe in again. Something to get our hopes up. We didn't know how good we had it running through QBs like Blackwell, Grothe, and Daniels. We expected more success. Now we find ourselves in a bit of a conundrum, we don't really know where we are right now because we are all biased evaluators of the team. Each of us seeing what we want to see (based on expectations). If you don't expect to see anything good every incomplete pass, missed throw, or interception will validate what you were expecting, and if you're expecting too much, every single catch, run, or juke will validate what you expect. It's how humans are wired. What we never get to do or see is evaluate each player position by position, play by play, for the entire scrimmage to see how they perform individually. That's primarily what the spring game is for. It isn't for our entertainment. We are more for them than they are for us. It gives coaches an opportunity to see who plays well in a game situation and not in the normal slate of practice. That's where you can see a third string lineman line up with 1st and 2nd string guys and go up against a starter on defense to see how they perform in that situation. It's a way to get a good shot into whether some of the young guys are ready and how they fair at the collegiate level. It's simply an evaluation. I think we need to see it for that. I've been going back with what little film is available from the spring and looking at individuals. I honestly think the team will be much better than last season. I'm not saying they will win the conference or do anything crazy, I'm just saying I see a lot of improvement in individual players. I'd say when you do this, if you do, take a look at Ruff, Hall, Dillion, Pope, Amachia, Bronson, Tice on offense, they had solid springs. On defense there was a ton of great play but specifically Awoleke, not sure about spelling, Bronson, Black, Holeman, and Vincent Jackson. Those are some guys who are set to surprise some folks. I didn't go with the usual suspects as I was giving examples of guys who I thought played much better and are showing a maturity. Will this translate to more wins? It should. But I always thought we were a three year project. This is the third year and I'm seeing there is a good possibility it will result in a bowl season hopefully. I saw enough to bring me back into the fold at least. I recognize these are solely my opinions so take it for what it's worth.
  15. Well said!! Team has very questionable pitching as displayed this evening against FIU. Yeah i dont know what it is with baseball and losing to less talented teams during the week. If it is like last week though I will take it winning 2 out of 3 against ECU. I feel this team has a chance to make the postseason, but we shall see, I still think 50/50 if we will or have a let down at the end of the season. Seriously, questionable pitching? You cannot make that statement and say you have seen any game this year. This kind of negative ******** is what kills me. Fine, lets discuss, Team ERA = 3.94, WHIP = 1.42, K/BB = 1.89 K/9ip = 8.98 Now lets look at the guys who are barely used 1-5 appearances each Adel, Clarkson, Hernandez, Savarese and Brandon Murray. These guys account for only 4.5% of the total number of innings pitched (13.2/301.2) Group1 ERA = 15.81, WHIP = 2.86, K/BB = 0.47 K/9ip = 4.61 Remove these guys from the above numbers and Team ERA = 3.38, WHIP = 1.35, K/BB = 2.04 K/9ip = 9.19 The point here is a small handful of pitchers have had a huge impact on ERA, but lets go further. Now lets look at the guys who have 6-10 appearances each Cavallero, Herget, Mulholland, Eveld, and Lawson These guys account for 60.7 % of the innings pitched (183/301.2) Group ERA = 3.98 WHIP = 1.39, K/BB = 1.88 K/9ip = 8.40 Nothing to write home about.....but lets look at the third group and then we can get back to this one. Now lets look at the guys who have +10 appearances each Farley, Peterson, Valdes, Strittmatter These guys account for 34.8 % of the innings pitched (105/301.2) Group ERA = 2.31 WHIP = 1.28, K/BB = 2.32 K/9ip = 10.54 Whoa, that is crazy good numbers there but Im not done Combining these four guys from group 3 with Cavallero, Herget, Mulholland from group 2 and we get Group ERA = 2.60 WHIP = 1.23, K/BB = 2.25 K/9ip = 9.41 So? You say. So, I say, those 7 guys with a team era of 2.6 and a record of 19-7 account for almost 80% of all innings pitched. How can there be no consistency when 80% of the innings have these kind of numbers. You wanna complain about the mid-week losses. They don't matter. Really, they don't. MId-week games are exhibition games that count int he standings. You try to win them but they are development games for the future starters on this team. Perhaps if Valdes continues to shine on Sundays and Cavallero comes back from whatever reason he is not pitching and the season starts dwindling, you'll see one of the two starting mid-weeks games. But in the meantime, expect the Lawson/Eveld development to continue. And watch a game or two before letting your airhole loose. I'm right there with you. I've seen the baseball team play around 10 games this season and I was impressed. They have gotten stronger as the season has gone along. They aren't going to win every single game. It's baseball, that doesn't happen. We may slip like we did against FIU... but the body of work is where a team should be judged and the body of work of USFMBB is pretty good right now... especially under a first year coach. The guys play hard and the games are being called really good by Kingston. I like what I see.
  16. I think that was the FSU game, wasn't it? He rushed for like a 100 yards, too. I could be wrong, too.
  17. This is my takeaway from all of spring ball.... Even with Flowers. People are missing the obvious it seems. I think we will be able to run the ball and run well. I think we could have the best 3 deep RB in the conference, and with Flowers legs, we just need him to not turn the ball over. I think we will get into the end zone often enough to win at least 6 games. I mean I see positives and negatives... but it's a spring game. Mack, Tice, and Johnson are a proven commodity. Those guys can run and break big plays. We just need to solidify five guys up front and I think we're on our way to doing that. With the emergence of that guy Hall... 6'5 330 Guard and add to that Thor and Ruff... or perhaps a Threatt, when Bethel arrives our point of contention will be the right Tackle. The read option and Flowers legs will open up running room. I know he was only 6-17 124 yards... but no ints and that wind I think that's was what was to be expected. I think we focus so much on the negative we miss the obvious. We are a running spread team and not a passing spread team. Also I suspect different play calling in the redzone, such as QB draws etc. I think we should be fine with more reps by august. I think Flowers is built in the mold of Grothe and Daniels. I think we are in a good spot right now. Go Bulls http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/new-49ers-head-coach-gets-a-little-grunty-in-his-first-interview-231453338.html
  18. I can't believe this thread was actually started. After 1 football game? I had no idea things were this bad. I'm actually astonished.
  19. Also, some people quote a comment someone makes, and respond with a "you do realize _____" and their point turns out to be dead wrong. With all due respect, you've shown on at least one occasion in 63 posts that you're more than willing to dive into dickdom ... please don't act like you're above the fray. Did you even read the original post? Also, saying "you do realize" does not constitute a personal attack. You do realize this don't you?
  20. I'm new here but I really don't comment a lot because if you say something positive, people will call you names. I just purchased season tickets for the first time and I'm excited about the season. I joined a board for the first time because I feel we are actually going to be better and thought there would be constructive criticism as well as constructive conversation. That seems to get lost here sometimes, imho. I see name calling, program trashing, and negativity. I'm pretty sure recruits come here... I know a few players do. It's like people chase fans away here sometimes... I've never seen anything like it. I honestly think a board like this could push kids away. I mean who wants to read a bunch of fans trashing a program? I'm just speaking as an outsider of sorts here but set aside the occasional checking of headlines, I really don't see a reason for consistently visiting here for conversation as it's all personal attacks and what is wrong. Also, player evaluations are personal and not critical here. It's weird.
  21. I don't put much onus into anything that comes out of Voodoo five. They use to trash CJL... were all over his being fired actually. And I remember many articles like this http://www.voodoofive.com/2012/9/30/3431528/florida-state-30-usf-17-b-j-daniels-is-electric. I mean to be honest, those writers know about as much as we do about the team and a few of them know less. They have been trashing USF for years. I never joined any sites so I'm not sure if anyone else noticed it... but voodoo five is pretty much a trash USF site. I used the BJ article because I thought it would add a little special flavor because I think people mis-remember how BJ was treated during his time.
  22. Spring practice has the base plays in them. It is the most basic of offenses. I would think moving to the read option will allow you to run plays much like the wishbone. The read is off the tailback inside and if the QB pulls it, I'm sure there are plays where either the slot or even another back are in the game and mimic the wishbone action in terms of the option, not the formation. I say that because I've seen Auburn and other schools use that same type of option.
  23. You realize Bench is a senior who already transferred when he came here. If he did again, it would be to an FCS team or he'd no longer be eligible. He literally has 1 year left. I'm not sure why you think he would transfer but I'm pretty sure he's not going anywhere. Especially since he graduates in December.
  24. I think Taggart is done playing true freshman at skill positions for a while. He only did it because it was necessary. Kean will redshirt as he should. Would not be surprised to see some true freshmen playing a lot at wr .... I wouldn't either... I think that juco guy could end up starting if he's as good as they say.
