Woeful Rays make pitch for new stadium

Wed Nov 21, 3:36 PM

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (AFP) - Having changed their name, logo and colors is not enough for the Tampa Bay Rays. Now the Major League Baseball team wants a new smaller stadium at a cost of 450 million dollars.

Club officials unveiled plans Wednesday for a waterfront ballpark with 35,000 seats, less than they have in their current domed home, where the Rays still have a lease through 2025.

The former Devil Rays began revamping their image after a 66-96 season. The perennial American League East division doormats have never had a winning record in their 10-season history.

The proposed stadium, which could open no sooner than 2012, reportedly would include one-third funding from the club and, owners hope, at least 60 million dollars from the state of Florida in future tax revenue.

No you are not reading it wrong..."never had a winning record in their 10-season history"...and they think they deserve even more from the community. Money makers know that "idiots" will always pay.
