Jarvis Moss suspended for UF-WCU

Florida still sitting at No. 4 in BCS with computer ranking likely to take a hit after visit from I-AA club

Wednesday, November 15, 2006

Surely with Louisville losing, and the No. 5 team Texas falling as well, and the Gators getting a jump of three spots in the human polls as well it was a given. Florida was finally ready to ascend to the No. 3 spot in the BCS rankings.

Let the debate begin. Southern Cal jumped from the No. 6 spot into the coveted third position in Sunday's new BCS standings. Florida stayed at No. 4. The Trojans have a .869 rating while Florida is at .849, with No. 5 Notre Dame at .819.

Even if the Gators had been sitting at No. 3 that would have probably been temporary, as the team's computer ranking is going to plummet after this Saturday's matchup. Western Carolina, a I-AA team that has lost eight straight games, visits the Swamp while USF faces fellow top 10 California.

Jarvis Moss has been suspended for the game though the reason was not given.

Of course Florida has to feel a bit fortunate it is still in the running for a national title. It just had that feel, that sickening feel for Gator fans, that Steve Spurrier was going to walk away from the Swamp having squashed Florida's national title hopes. But Moss saw to it otherwise.

The 6-6 defensive lineman jumped up and swatted a would-be winning field goal try by Ryan Succop on the game's final play, as the Gators won a heart-stopping game 17-16 on Saturday. Florida goes to 9-1 on the season.

Moss had also blocked Succop's PAT try after South Carolina had gone ahead 16-10 with 8:13 left in the game. That miss allowed Florida to possibly take the lead on its next drive, but it wasn't easy.

Florida needed a fourth-down conversion from its own 29-yard line, getting it in the form of a five-yard run by Tebow. Then Leak led the Gators down to the South Carolina 13, where Tebow entered and again went straight forward for the tying touchdown with 3:03 left. Chris Hetland's extra point put Florida ahead 17-16.

South Carolina had plenty of time and used it to move into field-goal range, but Moss came through by blocking the 48-yard try.

For a game that featured no scoring in the first and third quarters -- Florida trailed 7-0 until breaking the scoreboard in the final 90 seconds of the first half -- there was a lot offense. South Carolina gained 405 yards compared to 372 for the Gators.

Gamecock quarterback Bryce Mitchell threw for 272 yards while Leak was 19-of-27 for 253 yards. His TD pass was to Dallas Baker, who tipped the ball to himself on an underthrown pass. Percy Harvin caught six passes for 91 yards.
