Tampa, FL (Aug. 1, 2006) - USF Health opened its new Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Center today.  Two of the nation's best sports orthopedic surgeons have joined the center's staff -- strengthening the full continuum of sports health care that USF offers.

David Leffers, MD, and Charles Nofsinger, MD, join orthopedic surgeon Ed Homan, MD, at the center, located at 13601 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., Suite 121, in Tampa.  For appointments, call (813) 259-0929.

Dr. Leffers, who specializes in sports medicine, is the team physician for the USF Bulls and has worked extensively with professional athletes and teams across the Tampa Bay area, including the Tampa Bay Lightning and Tampa Bay Mutiny. Dr. Leffers directs the Division of Sports Medicine in USF Health's new Department of Orthopedic Surgery.

Charles Nofsinger, MD, who came to USF from the Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine in New Orleans, LA, is a biomechanics expert specializing in baseball. He is one of the few physicians in the region certified in cartilage and meniscus transplantation to treat defects of the knee.

Dr. Leffers and Dr. Nofsinger treat all types of orthopedic sports injuries, including injuries of the shoulder, elbow, knee, ankle and foot. They strengthen the USF orthopedic surgery team that includes Dr. Homan, Dr. Robert Belsole and Dr. Heidi Stephens and will work with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Larry Lemak, director of the Sports Medicine and Athletic-Related Trauma Institute (SMART).

They join the sports medicine team in Family Medicine -- Eric Coris, MD, and Michele Pescasio, who both provide primary care sports medicine.

USF Health now provides the sports medicine for USF Athletics, joining the athletic trainers who work with the university's teams. USF also has a full Physical Therapy Center as part of its School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences
