MSNBC: USF not getting enough funding

The Alzheimer's Center is named for former Speaker Johnnie Byrd.  He created it because he had the power to do so, and strong-armed the rest of the legislature to going along.  They never really liked the center.

But they aren't taking the money away -- there is talk that would require the center to "pass through" some portion of its money in the form of grants.  One proposal says that 80% of it's money should be grants.  The Center's Executive Director claims that would effectively kill the center.

Actually, the school northeast of us has much less power and influence in the state legislature than USF. Their medical school was approved however classic Florida politics style funding for the school is still up in the air. In the end, FAU, FIU and UCF medical school will get money, but they will not get enough to do it right. The limited pool of funds will now have to be divided even smaller and that hurts the existing schools.

The loss of the BOR has actually been advantageous to USF in a lot of ways. USF has the right idea, and I love the forward thinking of adding a pharmacy and dental school in the not so distant future. It will make USF part of small group to offer a complete health sciences center.

BTW, there was an article in yesterdays paper about politicians trying to kill the funding on the 6-story alzhiemer's center that is about 40% complete. If these people get their way, there will be shiny new research ready building standing w/o any investigators, staff and capital equipment needed to do world class research.

UCF has done well in the past couple of years getting funding for our enrollment growth.  I don't have any idea on the state of med school funding.  Howeer, you've still got the Moffit Cancer center which is a good thing.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
