I don't see it as unique, we just have more of the bigger names that have bigger egos and aren't willing to overpay past their prime.  Pedro is a prime example.  I thank him for all he did, and if he resigned for what we offered, it would have been great, but he wanted more than what he was worth.  

When we pay for players taht are on the downswing... it is often incentive based... (See David Wells' contract for a good example)

letting clemens gowas a huge mistake

they also should have paid JD

yanks gave hm the $$$ in 4 yrs that you offered over 5 yrs

he will be good for 3-4 more yrs....and he will not be playing cf fo the sux

$$$$ very well spent

we didn't offer a 5 year deal... we maxed at 4.  Perhaps we would have discussed 5 if Boras wasn't gung-ho about 7 years or hitting the road.

4years/40mill was the only offer on the table.  He didn't want it and jumped at the first deal that came a long.  

Would have been nice to have him back, but that isn't the philosophy of mgmt (anymore).  Set a value, and if they don't bite, look elsewhere.
