TAMPA - Persistent wind and unseasonably cold temperatures Friday night at the South Florida Invitational conspired to keep USF high jumper Jimmy Baxter under 7 feet for the first time in his past four meets.

"Too cold, too windy," said Baxter after clearing 6-81/4 to win. He failed on three attempts at 7 feet. Baxter, a Boca Ciega standout who jumped 7-21/2 in Gainesville last week, cleared a personal best 7-5 at this event last year.

"I wanted to put on a show for the crowd, but you can't control the weather," said Baxter, who will run the 4x400 relay today. "I don't want to make excuses. I should have done 7 feet at least."

Several state athletes had strong performances. The University of Tampa's Brant Speed captured the men's 1,500 meters in 4:08.43, Florida's Candice Scott won the women's hammer (214 feet, 9 inches) and USF's Brandon Carey won the men's hammer (175-8). Field events begin at 3 today and track events at 6.

It was very tough conditions for everybody yesterday.

They couldn't even keep the pole vault bar on by itself.

Of course, I showed up with shorts and a tee shirt and could only stay for a few hours because of the conditions.

Today the weather is beautiful, so I'll probably go back.

I think it starts at 3 PM and admission is free.

Guest BasketBull.

Just stop and think for a second...

Someone (Baxter) can jump 7 feet!

---That's just freaking AMAZING!

Sometimes it's hard for me to just reach for the remote. And actually I've hurt myself once or twice because it was too far away. And it wasn't cold!  ;D
