  1. The big reason I think UCF is often mentioned as a BIG 12 expansion candidate is not so much the quality of its athletics or academics or large enrollment, but simply because it is in Orlando and so many people across America only think of Orlando when they think of Florida cities. Orlando has Disney and the 2nd largest convention center in America and Orlando is such a huge destination point in Florida that it's the only city in Florida many people across US think of....everywhere else in Florida to them is the Everglades!
  2. About 4000 FSU fans are signed up for FSU pub crawl in Ybor City Saturday. They're getting some tailgating practice in getting ready for USF game at Ray Jay in few weeks. Will USF/FSU game sellout?
  3. Florida doesn't need more lawyers, and USF doesn't need more lawyers in state legislature...USF maybe needs better lobbyists working for it and telling legislators what to do.
  4. Would love to see USF and Tulane added to Big 12 if for no other reason than occasional New Orleans area road trip adventures. Louisiana has to have the best roadhouses anywhere. Years ago while on a hunting trip we ended up at 3 roadhouses at a crossroad somewhere between Houma and Thibodaux that kinda shared one big parking lot/field and we bounced all night between the 3 joints just as did the locals....I don't think there are any more fun loving and hard partying folks anywhere than out in the Cajun part of Louisiana....we woke up the next morning in one of the roadhouses and were served breakfast that included grits that had bologna sprinkled in them...first time I ever had grits with bologna in 'em.
  5. If the Texas governor can push for Houston getting in Big 12, Florida's Texan governor Rick Scott should be pushing for USF and UCF getting in Big 12. Let's get to work Scott.
  6. With all the mess that went on at Baylor athletic dept. recent years...the Big 12 sure doesn't want to add any schools with any in the least questionable 'goings on' going on. USF has been squeaky clean and doesn't have any lingering stink hanging about....plus for USF with Big 12.
  7. The triple jump is an event where luck can help a whole lot...Matthew has the talent and skills to do well....doing a run/jump where he hits everything just right and he can do a big one. Good luck Matthew!
  8. USF did have swim teams years ago. Money is probably why USF doesn't now. For starters a new pool would be needed on campus. Many colleges just have women's teams and not men's to comply with Title IX. Tampa Bay and state of Florida produce tons of young fast swimmers so fielding a USF swim team would be no problem
  9. USF doesn't have swim teams, but congrats to Clearwater, Fl. swimmer Melanie Margalis who qualified tonight for Olympic team with her 200 individual medley and 200 free swims. She's a good kid and will represent Tampa Bay area well at Rio games.
  10. http://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/big-12-could-earn-an-additional-1-billion-by-expanding/
  11. Friday some consultant is going to talk at BIG 12 meeting about money projections with expansion...read somewhere expansion could mean over a billion dollars extra for Big 12 members to split up over next few years...money talk will perk up everyone's ears tomorrow at meeting....schools other than Texas will tell Texas to shut up when the consultant gives his presentation tomorrow talking about extra $1 billion +.
  12. Visiting English folks attending American football games are usually surprised to see fans of opposing teams sitting near each other in stands. In Europe I guess you could end up getting skinned alive at a big soccer match if you showed up wearing the wrong team gear in the opposing team's side of stadium!
  13. That's pretty good ridin' going full-boar like that and not getting thrown!
  14. If Big 12 gets into Florida they need to land with both boots and add both USF and UCF. Forget about what some push research report spouts about only going with 2 teams. If Big 12 expands, I bet they go big and add 4 or 6 teams, including USF and UCF.
  15. USF is as aggressive as any university improving itself and preparing for future....more so than most universities by far.
  16. ESPN is owned by Disney like in Disney World by Orlando. Orlando is like a second home for ESPN people, so ESPN sorta has a kinda UCF connection. For ESPN folks UCF comes to mind before USF.
  17. The deal with UCF is that across the USA many people only can find 3 cities on a US map: NYC, Las Vegas, and Orlando/Disney World. If folks were polled across the US, many could only name one Florida city..they'd say Orlando simply because they know Disney World is there. The whole deal with UCF is people associate it with Orlando/Disney World. Many folks in US would tell you Tampa is maybe in Cuba south of Florida!
  18. Lot of wheels and gears turning in all this Big 12 stuff...the current Big 12 members' presidents, trustees, fans and ADs might end up in big shootout before they even get around to deciding to expand or not.
  19. If and when the Big 12 decides to add schools, Big 12 negotiators will probably play wannabe member schools against each other some. The current Big 12 members apparently don't get equal size slices of the conference money pie now with some Big 12 members like Texas getting extra big shares with its own TV network for example. If the Big 12 only offers USF some crumbs and USF wants a full slice, how much is USF willing to settle for to become a Big 12 member...when would USF walk away from an invitation money-wise in participating in Big 12 money pie?
  20. I think Judy is the best shot person for USF now getting into Big 12. Research reports, newspaper articles, internet chatter, etc. won't pick expansion schools...the Big 12 presidents will decide. Judy is a thick skinned, experienced, big university president who understands money and college sports inside out. She knows how those Big 12 presidents think, and she knows what they want to hear. I am confident that if anyone can twist enough Big 12 presidents' arms to get USF into Big 12....Judy Genshaft is the one to do it. If USF doesn't get in Big 12 it won't be because Judy didn't do her best trying.
  21. Hope USF's #1 salesperson, President Judy Genshaft, along with the USF AD and school trustees are in full court press mode right now convincing Big 12 decision makers to add USF to Big 12 conference. Like Confucius say: "He who waits for roast duck to fly into open mouth go hungry." This isn't the time to sit by phone and wait for call from Big 12...USF has to aggressively go after membership right now and convince Big 12 they need USF.
  22. It just seems to make most cents for a conference like Big 12 to go into a growing market that has most potential...why expand to market where people are leaving? Texas and Florida are the 2nd and 3rd most populated states in America now...the Tampa Bay region's population alone of 4.5 million exceeds the populations of about 25 of the states in America....over 20 million folks live in Florida now. Florida's growth rate slowed in past decade or so, but Florida is still growing. Florida's population has pretty much doubled every 20 years (except recent years with sour national economic slowdown) since Florida became a state in 1845.
  23. I was picking up my daughter by the athletic building one afternoon, and Lee Roy was standing just outside the front door entrance on sidewalk by parking lot waiting to meet someone or waiting for his ride...I still remember clear as day his big smile as we drove by him and gave him a wave. I hope some day a nice statue of Lee Roy, with that same big warm smile, could be placed at that same spot he stood that day by the athletic building now named after him.
  24. It is always amazing to me how much can be done in the last 10 seconds of a basketball game...a lot can happen, and it can seem like 10 seconds is a week.
