If snatching top A10 teams and creating a new conference provides for a better deal, then they bolt. You have to imagine there are a few 'what if'conversations going on with a few of those A10 schools, ESPN, CBS, and NBC right now.
-
I think we need to think outside the box... let's start a new conference with baseball only schools.

Just axe the football program and pour all of the football money into basketball. Watch your back Duke.
Worst idea ever.
Just axe the football program and pour all of the football money into basketball. Watch your back Duke.
LOL
Both Saint Leo and U of Tampa did this back in the late 1970's/ early 1980's and they are no where near the level of Duke.
Saint Leo and UT used to be the Tampa area's primary football rivals for a while there and now they are both unheard of obscure nobodies.
Just axe the football program and pour all of the football money into basketball. Watch your back Duke.
I don't think you're serious. We'd lose all that money if we dropped football

Blah. These basketball schools mean ****.
It is estimated to be a 15-20% loss to our TV deal.

Spoke to 2 sources who confirm ESPN report on Big East break-up from hoops schools. Still many hurdles to clear, but close to happening.
Shoot, not looking good!
-
Who would we have added (and have an invite accepted) besides ECU and Tulane that would make the Catholic-7 happy?
-
If we are at the point where we are pleading, it's a done deal.
"UConn president Susan Herbst has contacted officials from the non-FBS Big East members, pleading with them to stay in the league, sources told ESPN."
-
The Big East should be heavily talking to those BB schools with football teams in 1aa, about moving up, getting them on schedule to join the conference. They may be BB schools, but some like Villanova do have football teams.
Georgetown is the only other BB school that I know of that plays football. Have you seen their stadium?
-
So why 4 years? Just curious, as you know we did quite well from 06-09. Is that the average being considered for a jump?
My nerd database only starts at 2009. I can include less, but I can't include more.

Teams and their RPI rankings (rank of 1 is the best team in FBS, rank of 246 is the worst team in FCS). Yes, I know, there are drawbacks to using this... blah blah blah. It takes into considerion the W-L of each team, the W-L of their opponents, and the W-L of their opponents' opponents.

This is all I want for Christmas... as the article stated even with the loss of the non-football schools the remaining Big East football schools would still stand to make considerably more TV money then they would otherwise be able to make in a lower conference. Also the article mentioned that Temple's voting rights can be made mute by some kind of Big East voting clause. The article did not go into detail about what that clause is or what it says.
I'm on board with this... once the basketball schools are gone the football schools can then bring ECU on-board as a full member, and offer an invite for full membership to Boise and San Diego, assuming they don't bolt for the PAC or run back to the MWC. The Big East football schools can also reach out to BYU and bring them on board... if I remember correctly the basketball schools ruined the deal with BYU the first time over the issue of BYU TV rights for their basketball and Olympic sports.
Right now the Big East football schools need to do everything in their power to keep Boise and San Diego happy, perhaps give them a % more of the TV $$ or something, lure BYU into the conference, and keep the Big East name/history.
They can let the basketball schools have the rights to Madison Square Gardens since its a basketball venue anyway. I'm sure we can get another one in another major market that better fits our new Southeast / Southwest footprint. Afterall we have the following cities where a new Big East Tourney can be held...
(1) Tampa/St. Pete
(2) New Orleans
(3) Cincinnati
(4) Houston
(5) Carolina's (Charlotte)
(6) Philly
(7) Dallas
(8) Orlando
Travel for the olympic sports would be an issue. Having the tennis team travel from San Diego to Tampa or North Carolina is a cost issue.

Georgetown leading the charge?
But just 10 days after Louisville announced it was leaving for the ACC, a new wrinkle developed for Aresco. A conference source said Georgetown is leading the faction as teams consider breaking away and forming a league, perhaps inviting other basketball schools from around the country or partnering with the Atlantic 10.

WOW! Great article on the Maryland move. It goes to show you how secret they keep these meetings/phone calls. In fact, they violated "the state’s open meetings act."

So, let me put this in dummy talk. As it is now, we essentially negotiate2 TV contracts as a single conference: basketball and football. If the Catholic-7 break off and take A-10 schools, etc and create a powerful basketball conference and we create a hodgepodge football conference (but still better than the rest of lowly conferences). Could the two conferences negotiate as one to maximize both their revenues? Similar to how unions negotiate salaries? Just a random thought.

With release of BE football sched's for '13, #USF will travel 2nd fewest combined miles (3,454) for 4 conf road games
who is #1?

I'd rather play Temple than Southern Alabama, at least Temple has good basketball. If you think UConn and Cincy are so great that they'll fit in somewhere, why the hell not us? If I had to swallow this huge turd of a "new worst ever conference" it'd be more like econerds:
CINCINNATI
CONNECTICUT
SOUTH FLORIDA
UCF
SOUTH. METHODIST
HOUSTON
EAST CAROLINA
NAVY
TEMPLE
Choice of:
LOUISIANA TECH(Greatly improved over the past 4 years)
ARKANSAS ST. (Greatly improved over the past 4 years)
even after that, it'd still suck and I refuse to accept that we will have to do so. This University is putting far too much into our athletics program to let us fall along the wayside. Obviously we have been in talks with at least the ACC, just because we don't put it out there like cincy does...doesn't mean it isn't happening.
The sad part about all of this is that they might not be given a choice.

Nothing has gone the way we needed it to go as of yet. We will probably end up having to hit the restart button.
USF
UConn
Cincy
Temple
Houston
SMU
UCF
ECU
Maybe throw in Ohio and UMass. and end up with 2 FL teams, 2 TX teams, 2 OH teams, 2 New England teams, and 1 partridge in a pear tree Carolina school.
