  1. Holas from freezing Boise! I am sad that we won't get a chance to play eachother on a regular basis. I am bummed out the whole Big East thing fell apart. But, what you are reading is only part of the information. Our local rag got their hands on the "Boise State Membership into the Mountain West Conference Term Sheet."

LINK if you want to read it for yourselves. Its only 3 pages long and clears up a whole lot of misinformation that has been floating around out there.

BSU does NOT retain revenues generated from selling its TV rights. In fact, the MWC and BSU have separated BSU's media rights from everyone else, but the league retains the funds for equal distribution to all conference members.

The bonus paid for appearing on national television is defined as ESPN, ESPN 2, or any other nationial "over the air" broadcast. The requirement to be considered national is to be available in 90,000,000 homes. The bonus applies to ANY MWC team appearing in a game as defined. BSU had 2 ESPN appearances and 1 ABC broadcast this year and, if this deal was present, would be in line for a $1.3mill bonus. The bonuses paid comes out of the conference kitty priro to distribution of equal shares.

The biggie, from BSU's perspective, is the retention of 50% of BCS (Access bowl) payout. Under the old system, the confernece would retain the funds, pay a schools itimized expenses, and then give the school about $3-4mill. The conference would then divide the remainder between conference schools. Now, if BSU were to make a BCS game in 2013 the gross pay out would be approx. $21mill. BSU would receive $10.5 mill and be responsible for its own expenses.

That is what the Big East says they were unwilling to do. Hope this helps clear some things up.

I'm surprised this hasn't happened yet from other "lower" conferences. The Big East is losing teams and the MWC is adding teams.

  2. MWC gives Boise 50% of bowl game revenue, BYU 50% of bowl game revenue. That leaves ummmmm, ummmmmmm. Sounds like a great deal for the other teams.

Any MWC team that gets to a BCS bowl gets to keep 50% of the revenue. So, technically, every team gets the same deal as BSU.

I think the national TV money and home rights pushed the scales.

  3. http://espn.go.com/n...ing-mike-aresco

]The deal will allow teams that appear on national TV more often to make more money. Also, the league agreed to sell Boise State home games in a separate package.

The Mountain West also agreed to allow teams in its conference that play in BCS games and the equivalent when the new postseason system starts in 2014 to keep half the money. The rest of the conference will split the other half. In most leagues, all bowl money is shared equally.

  4. I won't pretend to have any special knowledge on realignment issues, but I will say that the remaining schools in the Big East should rewrite the narrative in the media by voting to dissolve the conference and focusing on who wants to join the "new" conference. This way the steady drip of schools leaving is mitigated somewhat by a discussion of who wants to participate in the new conference and why. It seems inevitable that SDSU and Navy will also part ways with the Big East soon. Instead of letting them "reject" the conference (to ESPN and CBS' continued delight), why not try to turn the narrative in our favor? Can't be worse than the constant negative press regarding the Big East.

Doesn't sound too bad at all. It would certainly change the narrative.

  5. New conference. Start with a base of Florida schools. USF, UCF, FIU, FAU, then add 6 teams located in the SE. Limit travel expenses for the teams and fans, create some out of close proximity rivalries.

    That would be terrible.

Why? It's a wild ass idea, but why do you think that it would be terrible? Are we '"above" anyone else that would be in that conference?

As Databull said, from a TV perspective it has zero appeal. I would also add that the on field quality wouldn't be appealing either. It is certainly not "SEC lite" as someone said. I think there are much better schools out there to form a conference with or build the Big East with. U of Ohio, Tulsa to name 2. Not great names, but quality has been strong over the past couple of years.

I'm not saying wild, unique ideas aren't needed, but putting USF in the class of FIU and FAU is a big disservice to us. I think the quality of our department is far superior to theirs.

  6. It is a PR nightmare if Boise/SDSU leaves, not necessarily an on-field loss.

If our conference looked like this:

    1.UConn

    2.Temple

    3.Cincy

    4.USF

    5.UCF (2013)

    6.SMU (2013)

    7.Houston (2013)

    8.Memphis (2013)

    9.Tulane (2014)

    10.ECU (2014)

    11.Ohio (2015-hypothetically)

    12.Navy (2015)

IMO, Boise would add to our tv deal, not detract. But, would it be earth-shatteringly different if they didn't come? I'm not an expert, but I don't think it would be. We have 2 TV markets in central Florida, 2 Texas schools that have some history behind them, 2 Ohio schools, and a 'national' team in Navy.

With basketball we have UConn, Temple, Cincy, USF, Memphis, and Ohio which made the tournament last year.

Research... I don't know where any of these schools rank when it pertains to research or if it is even worthwhile sharing research money like the Big 10. My guess is USF, Cincy, and Tulane do pretty well but for the others, no so much.

  7. Boise is going to be in a lesser conference no matter what... just like the rest of us. The money is going to follow them (and BYU) no matter what conference they pick. If they pick the Mountain West, lo and behold, a new tv deal with more money. Likewise for the Big East. What it comes down to is non-monetary considerations: home tv rights, blue uniforms on blue turf, all sports conference vs football only, AQ for 2013, etc.

  8. Let's get back at it:

Report: Boise State in talks to stay in Mountain West

    Updated 7:59 am, Wednesday, December 26, 2012

Boise State is in talks with the Mountain West Conference about the Broncos staying in the conference instead of leaving for the Big East in 2013, according to an ESPN report.

The Mountain West announced on Friday it had restructured its current TV media rights deal with CBS. The restructured deal gives the Mountain West the right to sell packages of games to two other networks, which could mean millions more for current Mountain West programs.

If Boise State does decide to return to the Mountain West, San Diego State -- also ticketed to join the Big East in 2013 -- could join the Broncos as the league's 12th member. The Mountain West intentionally stopped at 10 programs, leaving the door open for both the Broncos and Aztecs to return to the conference. The conference could be able to split into two divisions and host a conference championship game.

The Big East, according to CBS Sports, has talked with Fresno State and UNLV about joining the conference for football only. The league is losing seven basketball-centric schools, but their exit won't become final until a gaggle of lawyers agree on the major talking points -- when the new conference can begin play, participating schools, the name of the league, sites for the conference tournament, terms of the television contract and so on.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, no exit fee is expected for the seven, which includes Marquette, Georgetown, Villanova, St. John's, Seton Hall, DePaul and Providence. Butler, Xavier, Creighton, Dayton, Virginia Commonwealth and Gonzaga have been mentioned as possible candidates to make it a 10- or 12-team basketball conference.

  9. ok screw it. who cares about the quality at this point, we gotta get strength in numbers. this league is already diluted...

    - Get rid of the "Big East" name-- we are now a coast-to-coast conference

    - Get to 20 teams ASAP- west coast, south, north, i dont care

    - Create 4 divisions of 5 teams each, based on geography

    - Division winners (4) move onto 4-team conference playoff

    - Winner hopefully gets a BCS bid

we gotta create a buzz WITHIN our conference and with a playoff within our conference, hopefully it will generate national attention.

Yeah, and every school can get $5 per year

  10. It was great to spend some more face time with Coach T and meet his bride Teneshia and their sons Willie, Jr. and JT. They are some nice folks and seem to be excited about finding a home soon and settling in. No big earthshaking news reveals. Probably the biggest were that we may expect to see some more recruiting decommits that amount to addition by subtraction and that meetings have gone well with a certain QB candidate. Truly wish them all the best.

So, what did he eat/drink? lets get to the important stuff.
