It’s not uncommon, graduates of other schools support the teams of the Big Boys, all over the country. IE: Bama, or AU in Alabama, OU or OSU in Oklahoma, UK or UL in Kentucky, Georgia or GT in Georgia, OSU in Ohio....and the beat goes on, and on.
None (or very, very few ) of the people who sat near me for years, experienced football as USF students. There were some younger couples who brought children/teens (a few babies) with them to every game.
If I’m not mistaken growth in attendance by young grads (single or married) has been extremely low. So, I think your “easiest market to tap” is not as easy as you think it is.
When I lived in Florida, I had many neighbors who were USF grads...more of them traveled to Gainesville, and Tallahassee rather than to Tampa to attend football games.
Today, college football is run by, and made for TV.
There once was a school’s athletic department that declared their football team part of “The Big Four” on a billboard at the junction of 2 two interstate highways.
By far the highest rated (Massey) defense the Bulls have played against thus far was LSU (15). UCF is #8....the ladies are going to have to shoot lights-out or Tuesday’s game could be ugly. Temple was #174.
