They better be. TCU and USF have about the same hitting and pitching stats, but TCU has a very bad road record. We have them where we want them and should be able to take two out of three.

Well, USF may play TCU in tennis this weekend also, but I don't think we are ready for them in that sport.  :-/

The quarterfinal round of the 2004 C-USA Men’s Tennis Championship is underway in Memphis, Tenn. In the first two matches of the day, top-seeded TCU defeated No. 10 Southern Miss, while third-seeded Louisville beat No. 5 UAB. Both squads topped their opponents with scores of 4-0 and will advance to Saturday’s semifinals to face each other. In the next set of matches, host No. 6 Memphis faces fourth-seeded USF and seventh-seeded ECU will take on No. 2 Tulane.

Match #5 – TCU 4, Southern Miss 0

TCU cruised past Southern Miss, 4-0, in the quarterfinal round on Friday. The Horned Frogs came out strong and handily won the doubles point. Jacob Martin and Alex Menichini teamed up to record the first win in third doubles (8-1) and then the Fabrizio Sestini and Rafael Abreu duo clinched the point with a 8-2 victory in No. 1 doubles.

In the second flight of doubles, Hector Almada defeated Juan Garzon, 6-3, 6-1. Jacopo Tezza cleaned up in the No. 4 spot after pushing past Thomas Funke, 6-1, 6-0. Martin recorded his second win of the day with a victory in No. 6 singles over Dylan Mezey.

Also, USF Women's Tennis is playing #2 seed TCU today and it probably won't be pretty.

USF Sweeps Memphis in First Round, Take on No. 2 Seed TCU

Louisville, Ky. - Eighth-seeded USF swept ninth-seeded Memphis, 4-0, in the first round of the Conference USA Women's Tennis Championship on Thursday at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Bulls will now face second-seeded TCU, which earned a first-round bye, at 3 p.m. on Friday at Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. Memphis will take on the winner of the UAB/Saint Louis match in the consolation round on Friday at 6 p.m.

USF dominated the match early, winning the doubles point. Gabriela Duch and Marie France Lord Andrade downed Memphis' duo of Viktoria Gruber and Marlene Dirnstofer, 8-4, at the No. 1 doubles spot. The Bulls' tandem of Fabiana Taverna and Luisa Obando also nabbed an 8-4 decision over Andrea Feichtinger and Yesica Ares, 8-4, at No. 2.

In singles action, USF's Duch posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Dirnstorfer, while Patricia Kolendo defeated Ares, 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 4 position. Obando also swept Christina Wieser, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 6 position.

Casey Hudspeth will get the nod for Friday's game against TCU. Hudspeth is 5-2 on the year with a 3.52 ERA.

When the Bulls host TCU for a three-game series this weekend, two of Conference USA's premier pitchers could square off. The Horned Frogs' Clayton Jerome (7-2) boasts the most wins in the conference while the Bulls' top pitcher, Kyle Schmidt (6-2), is just one win behind.

Jerome has been stellar his whole career at TCU, USF coach Eddie Cardieri said. "He's one of the best guys we face during the course of the year so it'll be a big test, you know, a big challenge for our team."

Jerome has a 2.76 ERA in 10 starts this season and has 56 strikeouts in 65.1 innings of action. Last season he pitched a complete game against the Bulls but had no run support in a 3-0 loss.

Schmidt has been effective so far this season as well. When the junior transferred from Georgia Tech, he immediately became the leader of a freshman-laden pitching rotation. He leads the Bulls with a 2.89 ERA and has 42 strikeouts in 53 innings pitched.

The two pitchers could face each other Saturday afternoon at 1p.m. Cardieri was told Jerome is TCU's tentative starter for Saturday and he has said that Schmidt will start for USF. Casey Hudspeth (5-2) will go for his sixth win of the year Friday and the Bulls' Sunday starter hasn't been named yet, Cardieri said.

"It's a big series for us," Cardieri said. "We're tied with them in the league and they're a good ball club."

Brian Hierlmeier is glad his team got back on track Tuesday with a win over UCF after being swept by East Carolina. "They've got good pitching supposedly," Hierlmeier said. "Luckily, we started to hit the ball on Tuesday so we have some confidence built up and hopefully we can take that into Friday night."

Hierlmeier had a career night against the Golden Knights, reaching base every time up. The right-fielder went 4-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored in the 10-4 win. TCU looks to end a four game road-losing streak tonight. The Bulls have ended the Horned Frogs' last two seasons by defeating them in the C-USA tournament.

USF comes from behind to beat TCU 4-3. USF pitchers gave up only 4 hits. Whew!

Hudspeth was fantastic and Arbiton came in to get the last four outs without putting any men on base. Nice way to close.

Hopefully, we'll have the momentim going into tomorrow when there should be another great pitcher's duel.

USF Baseball Rallies to Defeat TCU, 4-3

A Two-Run Eighth Inning Gives Bulls Their Sixth-Straight Home Win

TAMPA, Fla. (April 16, 2004) – Scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth, the University of South Florida baseball team (25-11, 8-5 C-USA) defeated the TCU Horned Frogs (20-15, 7-6 C-USA), 4-3, on Friday, April 16 at Red McEwen Field. Consecutive singles with runners on base by senior Myron Leslie and junior Devin Ivany gave the Bulls their sixth-straight home win.

“A great comeback,†said Head Coach Eddie Cardieri. “It was one of those great ones to win, tough one to lose. But, I’m glad were we on the better end of it. Their starting pitcher (Eugene Espineli) did a great job. When they made the change, we were able to take advantage and put a couple runs across. Casey Hudsepth was very good tonight. He made two mistakes on the night, which ended up hurting him. But, he pitched very well and so did Daniel Albritton. To have freshman come in there and do a job like they did for us is tremendous.â€Â

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth, USF rallied to score two runs to take its first lead of the game. With runners on first and second, Leslie (.301, 4 HR, 33 RBI) hit an RBI-single to right field, scoring Mike Macaluso from second. With runners on first and third, Ivany, the next batter, sent a single to center field, scoring Bryan Hierlmeier from third and giving USF a 4-3 lead.

Starting pitcher Casey Hudspeth (5-2, 3.52 ERA) allowed three runs on four hits while striking out two in seven and two-thirds innings to earn a “no-decision†on the night. Freshman Daniel Albritton (3-1, 5.91 ERA) came in for relief of Hudspeth to earn his third win of the season, allowing no runs on no hits in one and one-third innings.

For the second-straight game, USF registered 10-or-more hits. The win also snapped a three-game losing streak in conference play for the Bulls.

The Bulls will continue its three-game series with TCU on Saturday, April 17 in game two at Red McEwen Field. Scheduled to start for USF is junior Kyle Schmidt. Slated to take the mound for TCU is senior Clayton Jerome. Game time is 1 p.m.
