For whatever reason this odd thought crossed my mind while reading this thread again.  What happens if college football just phases out over the next 20 - 25 years?  Talking about the CTE and concussion problems.  I don't think that will happen but it appears that there is an outside chance of the game changing to a point where people aren't as interested.

Then why put money into football at all?

    Realistically, football isn't going anywhere.

When I go to on-campus college football games... it's unequivocally different than attending a game in an NFL stadium miles from the school. I want an OCS to get that college football feel at MY school, not someone else's. I want to tailgate at USF, not in a dale mabry parking lo

I agree with this completely. Always have, and I've been to a lot of really ****** MAC games.

That being said I think a lot of that has to do with a 35,000 crowd in a 65,000 seat stadium. Just so cavernous.

also, the school has come a long way from the stale environment they blasted in the mid 2000s to today. They've gone great lengths to make USF games more college centric.

Why do you think the powers that be in a prospective P5 conference will put that much, if any, consideration into where we play our home games?

I don't think there is much out there that people can throw behind that answer outside of perception. Maybe some sort of conference-gate share (which I'm not sure exists).

That being said, I'm sure if it IS an issue that USF has learned through the attempted Big 12 push and are currently making the moves to show we're moving towards an on campus venue.

Agreed that they two different events.  However, we have a state of the art, on campus hoops arena and can't get 10K to come see a game.  10K is 25% of 40K.

The build it and they will come mentality is a movie tag line, nothing more.  Show me we can put 40K in seats every game no matter the opponent and I'll be the first to write a check for an OCS.  Until then, I can't see it.

    Go Bulls!

I mean, football is much more of an event than basketball. I don't think attendance will drop drastically with a OCS

I think the OCS plans by the school are more about developing the campus than just putting butts in seats.

i agree that now is a real time to do it IF you're going to do it

    Just curious, why?

"The 2012 season marked the last of six straight seasons in which USF averaged better than 40,000 fans, highlighted by a record average of 53,170 fans per game in 2007."

It's been long proven that the majority of those recent figures were inflated. Likewise, attendance 10 years ago is just a different beast it today's market.

40-50k with room to expand is perfect.

We have a state of the art basketball arena on campus and consistently have solid scheduling in and out of conference and our attendance is <5K.  Where are the "build it and they will come" fans?

Our WBB team has been ranked in the Top 20 and plays rock solid competition and the only real draw is UConn. every year.  I know, I know, it's women's hoops.  Again, where are the fans that attend in our OC arena?

    Go Bulls!

Football is just a different event than basketball. To even compare the two is absurd. Outside of a handful of schools, attendance isn't great at college football

An OCS isn't a prerequisite to get a P5 invite if you have an established brand. Pitt had won championships. Miami has won championships . Both have legendary players, heisman trophy winners and national fan bases.

We bring none of those things to the table. The establishment is already going to fault us for not having history, a rabid national fan base, a winning tradition, and so on. We cannot afford to turn out nose up at the price tag if we want to be a part of that establishment one day.

Pitt an in an on campus stadium when they were winning championships with Heisman type guys...

My guess for second place (world) would be Cricket. Though I'm not sure.

The U.S. makes up less than 5% of the world's population.  Yes, there is life outside of our borders.  Hoops , especially the NBA is wildly popular across the globe.

The numbers say basketball is a distant second behind soccer and is growing.

Doug Woodard may have been right about all the conference realignment due to TV contracts may turn out to bite the networks in the behind.

No. It's going to bite those without contracts in the behind. The next AAC contract is going to be negotiated next year, and it's not going to be pretty in this cost cutting world.

All major sports networks are in a crunch after losing millions of subscriber fees.
