  1. Sorry, but I think that "institutional investors" is just vague enough for me to not lose hope on USF purchasing that property. Our school is expanding unbelievably fast; my gut tells me that this land purchase is in the works. Another thing that leads me to believe that this is in the works is the new Hills. County commission's commitment to rezoning the areas between fletcher and fowler. 22nd st got rezoned a few years ago, and there are developers that have already purchased property to build $200K+ townhomes. At this time, I think they'll have a tough time selling homes with the crime rate as high as it is in that area; however, if USF has a hand in purchasing the mall it would make numerous parties (i.e. land developers and Hills. County) a lot of money. It's all public record, feel free to check it out and read between the lines. The Commission will be pushing big-time to increase the value of the land in that area; USF buying that property, does just that. It isn't vague at all, USF and their Endowment Fund would fit the definition of an institutional investor.
  2. Again, in risk of furthering this meaningless discussion, USF is extremely capable of buying the mall if the structuring and assignment is done in the proper manner.  USF's borrowing capacity is enormous, and one could see USF buying the mall (which could be put under contract then paid for in parcels which would be released as available to pertinent parties) and immediately parceling the site and selling large chucks to Moffitt, and Tampa General both of which have an extreme desire to buy land in the immediate vicinity and the county, city, and USF all have a fiscal need to insure those institutions can receive the necessary land to grow near campus.  I think to many of you are taking light of the need for land to further the growth of the medical and physical components that make USF a powerful research center.  Remember we rent the land that Moffitt, the school, and all the other clinics that occupy USF.  If USF doesn't buy said Mall, they could also risk one of those institutions buying it for themselves and vacating USF.  If done right, it would be a winfall for USF. ummm...this was told to me tonight by somebody we all look up to in the usf admin, but i won't say who it is on here. ummm, what was told to you? That we're not buying it because it costs to much money? Well, that might be the case from a pure cost perspective but that is not nearly accurate from a borrowing capacity, or an interest, and I would sincerely hope that person which told you doesn't work for the Endowment Fund, or in the Finance Department because they would understand better valuation models which would indicate feasibility and that whomever buys that large piece of land is looking at an enormous financial boon from selling it off to more institutional owner/tenant groups that need land in that area like Moffitt. You stated something that was entirely inaccurate that it costs to much money...you do realize that the land USF occupies and owns is probably worth over a half-billion dollars in undeveloped value. USF has the capacity to pull it off but it wouldn't make great business sense because it would probably tie-up to much capital with USF. What would make great business sense is a JV with another institutional investor who purchases the real estate and immediately sells a large chunk to USF for personal uses, another chunk to Moffitt, and a third to say MOSI (who is looking for annexed land too). Then, the joint venture takes some remaining slices on the exterior of the site and makes a killing selling out-parceled retail strip centers. The retailers will clammor for spots knowing they have all this employment surrounding the site. You don't actually believe Universities make all their money exclusively from tuition? The better, larger Universities have numerous revenue sources that give the Universities greater resources and power.

  4. Not to play devils advocate but the USF Endowment Fund is worth over $400m in assets, and that, my friend, is bigger than many mid-sized REIT's in the nation. Furthermore because of USF's borrowing necessities the Fund has been rated, and has an extreme borrowing capacity. Therefore, USF and it's components could be, and have been, construed as Institutional Investors many times. I have seen much smaller and weaker financial institutions then USF's Endowment Fund.
  5. Although they may finish strong USF, is right with FSU and UM in recruiting this year.  You can go by rankings, and as of the 30th FSU was ranked 49th on scout, but has since moved up.  Honestly there are a couple of Miami recruits that are highly overrated.  USF's class is fantastic by most standards, and easily by our standards.  I would say this is USF's best class by far top to bottom.  I usually rate classes by what type of athletes you have in the bottom 3rd, in the past, and understandably so, we've had decent athletes and some fillers.  This year especially is loaded with top notch talent, particularly adding in the early enrollees. Hey bullsmania, I always laugh at the ignorant, and I've got lots more adjectives to describe them but I will refrain so Brad won't come down on me, posters that point out flaws and act like we should be doing everything a super program is doing.  Then, now here's the laugher, they say they're 'realists' and are not wearing 'green and gold' glasses but others like you and I are the ones wearing the classes.  Here's where irony rears it's crazy little head, most of us that recognize and applaud the accomplishments are actually the 'realists', and the ones NOT 'wearing green and gold glasses.  Because we REALize the programs capabilities, and abilities, and we REALize that their accomplishments, albeit not the pinnacle of college sports, are very amazing given the REAL circumstances this athletic department is faced with.  We REALize, that to build a great program you've got to win, and grow.  For example, Gonzaga had to make an NCAA Tournament before fans followed and started donating...no school has ever won a national championship or gone to a BCS game in their first crack.  We REALize, even Boise State had to go to 7 straight bowls, get ranked in the top 25 a few times win some, recruit hard, slowly build before they finally were able to crack the top 5.  We REALize that Boise State's amazing run, and subsequent top 5 finish was not because of one season, but a culmination of 7 as they slowly built to this point. SO, we REALize you've got to walk before we run, and run before we jump.  We're know how difficult it is to achieve even what we've done.  Honestly I marvel at how competitive USF is in virtually every sport with such a limited fan and donor base.  I don't wear 'green and gold' glasses except for my cheering.  Those folks are the ones wearing the 'green and gold' classes and are NOT the REALISTS because they think to much of their alma mater and their capabilities, and through their 'green and gold' glasses they think overachievement is a National Championship.  Through their 'green and gold' glasses they think USF can compete in recruiting against anyone in their country.  FOLKS I WANT WHAT THOSE GUYS ARE SMOKING AND I WISH I COULD WEAR THEIR GREEN AND GOLD GLASSES BECAUSE THE REALITY IS FAR DIFFERENT FROM WHAT THEY SEE OR KNOW.  REALISTs they are not, more like dreamers, or rather purely negative people.  As many motivational speakers will tell you in a group usually 20% are negative, 20% are positive and 60% sit on the fence swinging both ways.  The 20% that are negative will always be that way and the goal of the 20% positive leaders is to not waste time and energy trying to sway the 20% negative because ultimately you will never do that.  Work with the 60% so they don't fall prey to the chicken little mentality. Also wanted to add that BSU's recruiting classes arent that great on paper FWIW. There is something to be said about development BSU's recruiting classes were actually very good on paper compared to their counterparts in the WAC, in the past five years BSU has brought in some stellar 4 star recruits and JC transfers that have really helped. But you are right it's always one part recruiting and two parts development, and one part having the proper system for said players to excel in and recruiting the right players for that system. Case in point we run a wide open spread offense, PJ not the QB for that offense, Grothe ran it in HS and fit it like a glove. That's an example of good recruiting, good coaching, and recruiting a player that was right for the system. Your earlier years you cited for UCF were better than most of your fans give Coach K credit for, his demise wasn't so much the recruiting it was an inability to retain good coaches, and a combination of not being in a conference and having a schedule conducive to allowing your talent to excel. Those years in 2002 and 2003 produced and UCF recruited some great players but Coach K took to many risks on guys that never made it in, and grabbed some bad apples to boot that he didn't deal with early enough and slowly became cancers. Those were his problems by and large. Leavitt has proven to be a master at getting the most out of kids. He's learned to do that since his days at Morningside, and coaching under Hayden Frye at Iowa, and Snyder at KSU. This allows him to do more with less, and maximize potential even when some recruiting services ignore that potential.
  6. Not trying to feed fuel to the fire but Hillsborough County almost lost an enormous component of Moffitt Cancer Center, actually their new collaborative effort with Merck, to Pasco because of the availability of land. USF, and Hillsborough do not want to lose Moffitt to Pasco just because of land, it would be destructive to the University if Moffitt moved all it's research out to Pasco and just kept the in-patient hospital on USF land. They found some land near the campus to help, but it won't be enough for a long-term solution. USF is also planning on expanding the research park. I am just saying with USF's building plans, and what's already on campus that can never be torn down and have really helped USF grow, expansion or land purchases are inevitable for USF. With that being said the OCS thoughts have always centered around the Athletics Compound.

  8. If Mac stays the HCC center/pf will sign, and he's sort of a clone of Mattis but taller at 6-8. No expect Holmes and Curry to pick up where Buckley left off. Next year, presuming we get the HCC center to sign this team has even more potential. Aaron Holmes and Dante Curry are super-stars more prolific scorers then Buckley partially because both can jump out of the gym, and penetrate to go with excellent shooting touches. Two positives for next year that I've seen the past three games. Amu Saaka has stepped up his game, really getting more physical and assertive on the offensive end. Howard improves almost every minute he's on the court. Next year you can see Howard as being the type of PG that gives you 12ppg, and 9apg....a true floor general. I am not saying Mac stays or goes but if we win 3-4 games down the stretch and compete throughout that's a strong statement. Grab that HCC center, with Curry, Holmes, and Jones this team has the potential to be very deadly next year.
  9. already have most of what we want, 1-2 fallouts but we were longshots already.
  10. McKensie, yeah.  I'm not worried about the recruiting except making sure we don't lose people.  Few more wouldn't hurt.  The only thing I'm concerned about with UCF is being upset by them in the next 2 years.  after that we can say au revoir. See why I say the star ranking system means squat?  It is a joke. How about recently enrollee Kevin Williams from Gibbs HS...he committed to WVU last year, didn't get eligible and switched his status, and enrolled at USF. To remind WVU wanted him badly and was pushing hard up until the day before he enrolled, Mississippi the same, and ditto for UAB, and another SEC school had thrown in their hat but it was a little to late... Williams doesn't appear on scout.com, or rivals.com, he returned four kicks for TD's last year in 5A and one of the toughest districts in that level. He has amazing speed, and shift, 4 INT"s, something like 700 yards receiving and 500 rushing. A real freak that could play corner or receiver, but we're bringing him in first to look at receiver. WVU envisioned him as their replacement to PacMac Jones on the return game. No stars, barely appears in those networks, yet WVU, Ole Piss, UAB, MSU, UL coveted the kid. Whispers that Kevin will make Ean Randolph look slow and flat footed...is he no good because of his anonymity or did USF find a huge diamond? Ask any Pinellas HS coaches who the top recruits, athletes in Pinellas were in 2005, the game breakers with real dynamics to their game- Jock Sanders, Kevin Williams, Andrew Harris, McCluster- most felt Williams was the best and fastest.
  11. No offense boys, granted this isn't Tobacco Road but FSU, JU, and UF had a final four visit BEFORE Donovan arrived. Ever heard of Joe Williams,Lon Kruger, or Hugh Durham- all were in Final Fours, and in fact Williams and Durham both took their teams to the Championship games against the UCLA dynasty. These names could help, Da Meat Hook, Artis Gilmore, Pembrooke Burroughs, Dave Cowans, Ron King, Reggie Royals. Nevermind Pat Kennedy, and Billy Donovan, or Leonard Hamilton's impressive run at Miami. I love this board but sometimes the youth seems to take things back about 15 minutes. Since 1970 FL schools have put 5 teams in the Final Four, and four into the championship game. Since 1970 TX schools have put three, and 2 of those were thanks to Houston discovering Hakeem under a rock. Like I said no Tobacco Road, but good hoops are played in FL especially if you can keep the good players in state.
  12. He improved from 2005 to 2006.  I discount the PSU game because of the environment plus the fact that there were so many kids playing their first game that game, but your point is stupid.  Last time I checked it was the offense that turned the ball over.  I thought he was in charge of the offense. Some on here may disagree with me, but I do not classify this core of receivers as great just yet.  Great receivers do not drop as many balls as ours do.  Yes, there was improvement from '05 to '06, but we were still a couple of dropped balls away from 2 more wins this year. You need to separate great individual effort from play calling.  Andre Hall had most of his success due to tremendous individual effort and talent.  They were putting 8 men on the line and he still carried the team on his shoulder.  A good coordinator would have/could have done a lot to exploit that and loosen up the defense. I'm not trying to knock Rod at all.  He is very young ( I think they said 2nd youngest coordinator in the nation) and he has potential to grow, but he still has a lot to learn.  Unfortunately,  you really can't say he has developed anyone yet.  Wouldn't a good measure of that be guys that made it to the next level?  Sometimes you win because you are more talented and deeper than the other team.  Sometimes you win by better game planning.  Most of the time we won because of stellar defensive performances.  Rod had a few good games and was showing improvement, but I can't say he did a great job as you are saying.  He still has a lot learning and growing to do. 84, your last paragraph sums it up pretty accurately. He was a very young guy, in a bit over his head, and had a lot to learn- self admitted which is why he's back at WVU. He hasn't developed any real players, he hasn't developed an offense that was difficult for defenses to stop. He was showing signs of improvement but let's not be melodramatic about him. He was a decent young coordinator, that was getting a TON of help from Gregory and Franks, still in a bit over his head, and will probably develop into a good coordinator by making the move he's making right now and taking a step backward (in stature or title). Like they say sometimes you've got to take 1 step back to take two steps forward. No ills toward Smith, the guy tried but the kind of program we were, our youth, talent, he was just called on to do more things in his 6 years then his skill sets had warranted.
  13. Oh, and winbane some would say our defense benefited from a weaker schedule but I would contend that's not the case. WVU, UL, KU, and Rutgers all had offenses ranked in the top 30, and we held each one well below their season averages in ppg, and yardage, however our offense was ALSO HELD below their season outputs in those games in ppg and yardage....so IT WAS THE DEFENSE, that won or kept us in those games more so then the offense. If one looks into the stats it tells a much truer tale then the one a certain board member is spinning.
  14. No problem, it's much easier when you look at true comparisons and facts and not just one man's opinion. Just because an offense improves from a previous year doesn't automatically make it better. Last year's offense was pitiful ranked the worst in the nation in many categories so improving on that is like Mac winning 12 games this year and calling things successful because he improved on a 7-22 season. You could call it improving, but is it really improving? Call me when our offense is running like UL's, or WVU's where the single reason we're winning is due to an unprecendented and top ranked offense, not because we've improved over last year's abysmal offensive output and our defense is one of the best in the nation. You can put a dress on a pig but it's still a pig. I'd hope the hoops analogy would help Ari relate a bit better.
  15. Why did Frey leave? Easy, WVU's last OL coach Triplett, was just hired by FSU to coach their OL for an obscene amount of money. The OL job at FSU was one Frey coveted but they barely gave him a look. The WVU OL got the job and oodles of cash too, more than even WVU and their bonus money. That should say all you need to know of Frey's reasoning, that coupled with the fact he and Magee are like best friends. He will be missed, and believe it or not he'll have to put in long hours working for Rich Rod too, but at least there he gets big dollars, and even bigger bonus dollars that USF couldn't match- that comes from their alumni fund. The hours are always easier when you're getting paid more to do them and working with great friends doing it. No conspiracy, no problems. If Leavitt was so bad why would a guy as qualified as Gregory come coach for him, or Franks, or Douglass, or Burnham...it's just guys going on to better themselves which isn't hard to understand.
  16. Good stuff, all the recruiting targets seem to have responded very positively to Leavitt's actions and compassion regarding Dorsey and the handling of the team since this happened. The weekend of 2/2 is shaping up to be a large visiting weekend and thus far despite pushes by other staffs no defections.
  17. I'll agree with you there- a change is now necessary. The record is abysmal, regardless of the potential we've got to try a new approach and coach.
  18. Supposedly redshirted at Pearl River. He was a sign and place.
  19. Again, Greg Gregory was 100% as co-offensive coordinator this year.  Full game planning and play calling.  I'll just make it simple on you, because I am not going to debate further you give your man love to Smith...but given that the ONLY time Smith's output on offense was good since 2002, was when Greg Gregory was working right beside him gameplanning and calling the plays.  SO, Greg deserves just as much of the credit. Oh, and this working for, or working with Pat White is a promotion is a joke.  Clearly you're a young man that hasn't experienced the real world, but I can promise you carrying the water for someone that does all the heavy lifting is not a promotion. I hadn't heard that before, but it does make sense since our offensive playcalling did improve drastically in 2006. Yes Coach Gregory was next to Smith in the booth.  He was involved in gameplanning all year and play calling.  Additionally Franks has always been involved in the running game plan, and was the guy credited with Hall's evolving into the back he became.  Ari seems to want to give Smith credit where it isn't warranted.  The game plan and play calling was better this year, partly due to Grothe, and partly due to a revamped scheme that included all the offensive coordinators- Gregory, and Franks. As for outgaining 9 out of 13 teams that's like saying we scored more than 9 opponents....duh we won 9 games.  That doesn't prove much, give me stats that demonstrate an above average skill or play calling.  You can't go say we outgained 9 opponents and give all the accolades to Smith when clearly exceptional defensive play also led to some of that differential.  Are we suppose to say Smith was the reason we beat WVU?  We out gained them, but did we outgain them because of Smith or because our defense played amazing and held the top rated WVU offense to 200 yards less than their season average.  That's the ignorance in that type of logic....we outscored 9 opponents but was it exclusively due to an offensive attack like WVU's or UL's, or because we had a balanced team with an excellent defense that held opponents to an amazingly low 16.9ppg which was good for an 18th national ranking in scoring defense. Let's take a look to see what was really the catalyst to this great season since Ari refuses to look at actual facts. National rankings: Scoring Offense: 23ppg, that was good for being tied for 64th in the nation....hmmm Ari, 64th in the nation out of 119 teams is pretty average to me some might say BELOW AVERAGE when you consider the teams around us and we're on the lower end of the 119 teams. Scoring Defense: 16.9ppg that was good for outright 18th in the nation....seems it was the defense holding opponents to lower yardage and scoring marks that led to more victories instead of our AVERAGE OFFENSE winning anything. Total Yardage Offense:  averaged 361ypg which was good for 45th in the Nation out of 119 teams, just slightly above average but considering the scoring stats and weaker OOC you'd have to say AVERAGE AGAIN! Total Yardage DEFENSE:  averaged 298ypg which was good for 25th in the NATION out of 119 teams, NOW THAT IS GOOD.  It looks like despite our very slightly above average yardage total was helped out tremendously by our VERY GOOD defensive yardage surrendered. SO, Ari, based on NCAA stats our offense was AVERAGE.  You're assertions about Smith having a good output, and that I was wrong stating it was simply average is WRONG!!!!!!  Outgaining 9 opponents, and outscoring 9 had as much, if not much more, to do with an excellent defense then Smith's 'amazing' offensive juggernaut you claim.  You might have had an argument if we had an offense like UL, or WVU but if we had that Smith would have been hired away to go somewhere and RUN HIS OFFENSE, instead of going somewhere to work under, and take a lower position to learn a system. Now walk away gracefully because I don't see the need to carry this further. Here's the link for your personal edification.  Thanks for playing. http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/natlRank.jsp?year=2006&div=4&site=org For the record on countless ocasions I've stated I am ready for a change in coaching for the hoops program.  However I only criticize the manner and timing of your criticisms of the program that at times are unwarranted and inaccurate.  The program needs a change, but it has some good things to take away from it too, albeit I'll reserve that judgement until after tomorrow's Rutgers game.
  20. 21. Ari, one thing is certain I know far more about football then you can dream. Smith was managable and in over his head....this is pretty well known. In fact, you can guess this is certainly fallout for the absymal showing in 2005, and the fact he nearly screwed up 2006...that's another story all together. Gregory has been groomed for this for quite sometime. If you're such a stats man then you should love gregory, he's got more experience, and knowledge in his pinky finger as Smith has in his entire body. Also, a did you know, because you don't know, is this year Greg Gregory assumed 100% of the gameplanning and playcalling duties along with Smith- both worked in the booth. This was intentional, Smith was so poor in 2005 Leavitt was hedging his bet and using Gregory to back-up Smith. Not coincidental that it also led to our best offensive output in 5 years, oh and those previous 4 had Smith and Hobbie at the helm. Smith left for a reason, and Gregory was moving into the offensive spot. But hey, another case where Ari looks silly by not knowing all the facts and blowing his load.
  22. No your the one that makes zero sense. The hoops ridiculousness is one thing but this stuff is a joke. What's even more funnier, or rather ignorant is you seem to give Smith credit for everything....now he gets credit for Hall. Smith wasn't even responsible for designing the running game in 2005, that credit goes to Carl Franks, THE RUNNING GAME COORDINATOR, you dufus. Smith never recruited Hall, or never played a part in his development. In 2004 and 2005, Franks tutored Bulls’ running back Andre Hall, a junior college transfer who came to USF at the same time Franks arrived. In those two years, Franks helped mold Hall into USF’s all-time leading rusher with back-to-back single season rushing record seasons. With Hall now departed, Franks turns his focus to a strong group of runners looking to replace the record holder. An excerpt from Carl Frank's bio for your reading pleasure. You want to give Smith all the credit for beating WVU, screw the defense? Or does Smith get credit for the defense too? Smith's record isn't awful, which is why he's going to WVU as some sort of coach, but he's taking a demotion, and going somewhere to re-learn an offense. He's no norm chow, or jimbo fisher as you're trying to insinuate.
  23. Compliments of one INT returned for a TD, a punt returned to the ten yard line which spotted him nearly half of the 31pts we scored against Cinci. Next your going to give him all the kudos for beating Rutgers in 2005, despite two defensive td's, one special teams, six turnovers by Rutgers. How about the 17pts against a marginal Pitt team last year, or the 10 against a marginal Uconn, or the O against an average NCST...whooaa the 21 against FIU....3 against Cinci this year. This is getting funnier as you go.
  24. good grief Ari quit while your ahead. Your basketball rants make you look bad enough but this is just plain laughable. A guy who's offense averaged under 19ppg last year, any OC that does that in his first year usually gets fired. Oh and averaging 23.3ppg is not inspirational, it's average. What exactly did he do against WVU that was so inspiring? He beat WVU for sure, but we scored a defensive TD, and our offense only racked up 17pts. Make no bones our defense pure and simple won us the game. Against, UL, well two TD's aren't on him. And on that night hard to give him credit because USF was in such a zone PJ could have played with one leg and we would have won. Everything went our way that night. If you had any clue you'd know Rod Smith's recruiting record was awful at USF. They stopped using him for closings and in-homes, the guy wasn't closing the deal. He took a demotion to go back and re-learn the offense under his previous mentor- Rich Rod. Rich Rod's system is already in-place and proven Smith isn't coming in as an enhacement or to improve it. Rod will have zero involvement other than assisting in gameplanning and preparing the QB....how in the world could anyone look at this other than a demotion.
